Aria has 2 entire episodes about decommissioning a gondola. It was beautiful and I teared up in both.

What's your excuse for not watching the greatest slice of life of all time, /a/?
>>
>>139678555
Samefagging here, but seriously.
What is this magic? Nothing happens and the show is still fucking precious to me. It's an enigma, but such a wondrous one
>>
>>139678555
but I am. Already halfway onto the second season.

Literally Ghibli + cute girls
>>
>>139678885
Are you counting the Natural as a whole the second season, or just the first 13 episodes?

Reading the manga, albeit very slowly. I didn't really care for the anime as much and still have yet to finish Origination.

I was thinking about this today, would you consider Aria to be a character-driven iyashikei or a plot-driven iyashikei?
It seems like Aria has a bigger focus on events and situations happening in Neo-Venezia rather than internal character conflicts (there are some, just not a whole lot compared to something like Tamayura). It seems more plot-driven than character-driven.
>>
>>139679208
I'd say it's both. While the plots are a driving point, I find that the characters' outlook on their life, and their overall mindset towards living it, is what the show really focuses on. That makes sense too -- Kazue Amano herself said that it was intended as a "therapy" manga, intended to uplift its readers and leave it with a sense of wonder.
>>
The gondola arc was pretty great.
>>
I'd like to watch it one of these days. How many episodes? Is it still ongoing? Is it based on the manga or viceversa? If so, how is it as an adaptation? Cause I'd rather read the manga unless it's really good.
>>
>>139679150
I consider the Natural as the whole second season (I am on episode 13 as of this moment, watching right now)

>>139679208
I'd say it depends. Don't really know the pacing the manga has (no idea how faithful it is to its source) but in the anime it depends on what season we're talking about. first season is character driven, second is plot driven with a side of character driven (yet most episodes focus more on the setting)

There's an OVA series called Avvenire, but there's only 3 and only 1 has been translated. It's essentially over now.
Based on manga
Fucking amazing

Also, the OST is incredible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Df3JzEbTU0
>>
>>139679442
It's pretty good.
and if you read the manga atleast make sure you listen to the ost while doing so because it adds so much to the atmosphere (literally so much, there's not a single track I don't like)
>>
>>139679442
Its okay as an adaptation. It was made on a shoestring budget, so the manga is much better in my opinion. You do miss out on the cool OST though.
>>
>>139679442
The manga is far superior but the anime is still top tier
>>
>>139679208

First two anime seasons are plot.

Origination is character.
>>
>>139679543
Based Choro Club.
And I still can't find barely anything else by them.
Nana Iro no Sora wo is also one of my favorite songs, but I can't find literally anything else by SONOROUS, who's credited for both composition and lyrics. I suspect he's a member of Choro Club though.
>>
>>139679208

Character-driven, with the caveat that Neo-Venezia is a main character.
>>
I did watch it. It was possible the best anime I've ever seen, bullshit surprise marriage at the end aside.

What are your favorite moments in the whole show, Ariabros?

Pic related for me. For some reason it rivals even the whole final episode.
>>
>>139679593

What?

S1 is basically character and world intro.
S2 is more world exploration.
S3 is tying up all the themes and culminating in one of the best endings of all time.
>>
>>139680295
Plot-driven doesn't necessarily mean there is an overarching plot.
Most of the first two seasons involve festivals and supernatural Neo-Venezia phenomena. It has nothing to do with the characters themselves.
>>
>>139680432
I see. I'm not sure if that's the correct term for it though. I mean characters is a subject, plot isn't. Perhaps setting? And a great deal have to do with a theme or message more so than the individual story of the episodes.
>>
>>139680566
I just think the fact that none of us have anything bad to say about it, despite not knowing even if it's about plot or characters, is pretty amazing. Not even kidding you, this show will probably make me a better person.
>>
>>139680350

The episode that stands out for me the most is episode 10 of season 1 when they learn about how their senpais were just like them, and that really sweet moment on the bridge when Akari cries out to them because she's feeling sad that one day they'll be in a similar spot where they can't always see each other as they do now as trainees.
>>
>>139680566
From what I gather, its pretty much external vs internal.
The main characters going on a treasure hunt is external, Akari following Cait Sith around is external, while Aika's hair cutting episode is more internal.
Plot-driven is external events while character-driven is internal events.

The magic is that it perfectly captures how the present can seem so slow and idle, and yet how suddenly you can look back and see how fast it all was.

There is something about the anime that I haven ever experienced in any other anime. That is that the OP song starts off seeming awkward and hard to feel fits. But by the end of the season, you understand and appreciate how it does, as the characters and story grows. Then you start the next season, and miss the previous song and nostalgia, but grow all the same to love the new song. And then you hit season 3 and Kin no Nami Sen no Nami is nostalgic and emotional.

Beautiful soundtrack, great direction.
I recommend both the manga and the anime.
>>
I tried to get into it because I pretty much love every SoL. But I just couldn't. Maybe I should just keep watching.
>>
Why hasn't ep2 of Avvenire been subbed yet?
>>
>>139681527
My guess is the lack of hype. I haven't even heard of ARIA until a month ago, listening to Eden radio and falling in love with its OST. I haven't seen nor heard any mention of the series until then.

Not much point spending hours translating a series no one even knows about, from the subber's perspective.
>>
>>139681651
Everyone knows about Aria.
>>
>>139681501
How many episodes did you get into? It took me a good 6 episodes before it grew on me, and I mostly stuck to it entirely on the grounds of the soundtrack and voice actors.

>>139681749
Not outside of /a/ it doesn't seem. It just never came up where I usually lurk
>>
>>139681651
>no one knows about Aria
you what?
>>
>>139681884
Huh, must be wrong about that.
My standpoint is from a generally-non-4chan-browsing normie who only knows shows that are reviewed on Youtube, since that's what I've been until very recently. The most popular review of the show has like 5000 reviews, and the most popular show recommending it has 100000 (from the same channel).
>>
>>139681527

>>139681994
Yeah sure, but the non-4chan-browsing normie only watched Naruto and One-Punch Man. Sure Aria is not as "mainstream" as other shows, but it's still pretty well known in my opinion.
I'd say the fact that there's no subs yet is mostly due to >>139682040 , and also OVAs always tend to get longer to be subbed than currently airing shows.
I'll admit that Aria being an old show doesn't help.
>>
>>139682385

Shh. No fun now, only nostalgiatears.
>>
So what happens once I'm done the series? Do I kill myself?

Held off watching S2 a long time ago because once it ends I'll be missing the happy feeling this show gives me.
>>
>>139682630
You live by it, anon.
This whole show is about finding the wonders hidden in the everyday, as long as you hold the right mindset.

When you finish, do some soul-searching. Find something you love and really go after it. Talk to your friends more, and maybe even travel a bit. It's all about what you appreciate, not what you have.
>>

>>
>>139682734
There are people who travel less money than living in an apartment. In Southeast Asia, for example, you can easily travel for no more than 25 a day. 4 months there, including plane ticket and travel insurance, would cost about 4-5000 dollars.
It doesn't even have to be that long either, of course.
Also, if you don't wanna, you can ignore that bit and take the rest of the message anyway.
>>
For how much everybody gushes about Aria, I could never get myself started on it. I've just never been much of a slice-of-life fan unless I can really connect with the main cast, and truthfully there wasn't much appeal for me there in the first few episodes.

It certainly has a comfy feel to it in terms of the visuals and style of narrative, but those things have always just been bonuses to me instead of reasons for enjoying a show.

Is it really just not for me, or do I need to try again?
>>
>>139682857
Personally I think the anime is a little slow. The manga is a bit better with pacing and you can just take your time with each chapter.

Then maybe you can give the anime another try after actually learning about the characters. There are a few differences in the anime so you can still be experiencing something new.

>>139682857
It's a little bit of an acquired taste, but the entire thing (including, and especially, the characters) grows on you immensely. Watch the entire first season, even if it takes a while between episodes. Truthfully it took me about 3 weeks to finish the first season because I wasn't interested until towards the end.

I have never been a fan of slice of life either, and to be honest the first few episodes of season one were really hard to watch because I didn't know what to expect of Aria.

But when you just relax and enjoy the beauty of the visuals, music and the somewhat over the top characters, you'll love it.
Just expect to see nothing of direct importance, every seemingly unimportant moment finds its place in the story some way later on.
>>
I love ARIA, one of my all time favorites but it's far from perfect.

Akari's overenthusiasm can be pretty annoying at times, I never liked how Aika always teases Akari nor that she only became friends with her so she could get closer to Alicia and her catchphrase. Alice is an autist who yells at poor Athena who does nothing wrong, don't get me started on the left hand episode. I have no problem wth President ARIA in the manga, I wonder why.

But when it gets emotional it can hit really hard and the OST is probably the best of any anime.

Real talk, that finale was one of the worst episodes in the whole series, and one of the very few things that were actually bad about the show. Conceptually it was great, but the marriage came out of nowhere, the execution and the drama was just so overblown and unsubtle, the "how everyone ended up" thing was cheesy, dumb and unnecessary, and Ai's appearance was shoehorned as fuck. I loved reading the original manga (that is, Aqua, didn't read the rest), but wtf the anime was such a terrible drag. They always keep reusing the same shitty, one-dimensional, static hazukashii serifu gags instead of using more time on actually exploring the world.

Also pic related.

>>
>>139691339

Not really. Fiction should have some semblance of reality in it. Aria's messages feel particularly flat and uninspiring due to how far removed their world is from ours. Something like YKK doesn't have that problem despite also existing in a distinctively different world because it isn't a saccharine nightmare.
>>
>>139691600
I don't think that lack of any relevance to our world makes aria's messages flat and uninspiring. Doesn't ykk have the same messages as aria? Why just because the world is more grunted in reality makes them better than aria? Aria's aim was to create utopia, show how idealised people live there and what can a normal person do in order to feel like those characters. Just because those messages aren't really useful in our world doesn't mean they can be so easily discarded and called flat. Because they have meaning and are understandable as long as you don't apply them to the world they're not created for.

I disagree entirely. I have zero idea about the marriage complaints unless you're a delusional yurifag, and endings where they show you what everyone's doing are great because you get closure on everyone instead of having them just disappear off. The link to the very first episode showing that the cycle continues once again, and that the end is a new beginning means that Aria never really ends. It just continues with your own life. If you aren't living like you're in Aria, you didn't take away from it what you should have.

Every single encounter with the supernatural wants to kill Akari. The only reason she's alive is because Cait Sith is there for her. And it's not just the headless woman. The Fox's Wedding would've taken her for a wedding present, the mirage cafe vowed to kill her next time, the cat's monthly association would've trapped her for eternity, and so on. The reason she stands up again and again searching for more wonder isn't because she has a safety net; it's because her innate hope and belief is stronger than anything the world can throw at her. Don't give in to the evil without, trust in the light within.
>>
>>139692802
Shoot that's extremely gay why would you screencap that? That kind of thing is exactly why he called it a saccharine nightmare.
>>
>>139690215

It's interesting that Alicia kept that side of hers a secret from the trainees, although I'm sure Athena and Akira knew about it. I always assumed that Alicia always came to sleep in the same building as Akari, so she'd know if she was out doing stuff that wasn't related to work. Or maybe all they did was hold hands before marriage. Not worth thinking too much about it.
>>
>>139692457

The art is fantastic in the manga and the anime obviously can't compare, but the music and voice acting of the anime are great and add a very nice dimension and atmosphere that is needed for a slice of life like this.

There are many scenes in the show that far surpass the manga strictly because of the addition of time and music and that's proof ofit.
>>
>>139680350
What was President Aria looking for? Was Akino special in any way?
>>
>>139698638
Who knows. I think that's part of the beauty of it.

You can't possibly understand why he's sitting there even in the rain, but it must be something so important, something he believes in entirely that he feels he must not move. What incredible dedication right?
>>
>>139698859
That's unsatisfying for me. I hate having to inject my own meaning into the scene
>>
>>139692890
You may think it's extremely gay but it's extremely true.

The biggest takeaway of the show is that appreciation of the life you have now makes life that much better, and the characters' differing outlooks (and how Akari ultimately affects theirs) is the driving point for it.
>>
>>139699025
The author's own meaning is as subjective as our own. And if one abides only by the author's meaning then it's ultimately limiting is it not? It takes on the form of a math equation and has only one possible meaning and nothing more - there's no room for exploration, for the reader to find within themselves a meaning that applies to their own lives.

>>139701101
Finally someone says it.

And just to make this clear, it was a just a normal chapter in the manga. It was the anime that exaggerated it to unbelievable levels and turned Akari's idealism into autism.
>>
>>139692074
>Why just because the world is more grunted in reality makes them better than aria

That's part of it. Emotions feel more genuine throughout and YKK knows how to present its themes without being overly sentimental, which Aria has no clue how to do or simply has no interest in doing. The dramatics involving the death of her gondola is exactly what I mean. Fuck, compare that to chapters where Sensei wants Alpha to sail that old ship of hers that never left land. Far more subtle, understandable, and meaningful since it relates to not only her distant past but the world's as well, a feeling of parting and renewal everyone has had at least once. I'm well aware of the idealized world Aria is depicting, it just failed to get me to empty the kool-aid glass pass half. The shallowness and repetitiveness of its narrative didn't endear it to me. Still, I liked it well enough for what it was.

There were literally zero mentions of Alicia dating anyone before the marriage, and when she does get married we don't even see who the groom is, because he was that unimportant

The marriage was incredibly dumb and just a way to get Alicia out so Akari can continue the cycle. If they had just established Alicia's boyfriend prior and gave him a true introduction it would have been acceptable, but that would upset the Aliciafags or something.
>>
>>139702648
You're looking at it backwards. Alicia was out of there no matter what because of her new job at the Undine Association. Getting married was Amano's way of giving her a bit of normal, non-work related happiness. He was a bonus for her happiness, not the cause of her leaving.

But on the whole, Venice just smelled like your average coastal town.

>>139702639
It's more a mix of septic tanks and depositing waste into the canals to be flushed out by the daily tides. From what I understand, private residences, businesses and hotels are required to have septic tanks and dispose of the waste that way... But the city's still in this weird middle ground between the two.

While I didn't see anything revolting floating in the canals (other than damn tourists), we're still a long way away from tiptoeing through Acqua Alta in bare feet.

I'm not saying that Amano should explicit tell us what President Aria was thinking of course, just that she should flesh out his relationship with Akino more so that we have a better idea of what his background that led him to wait by the pier like that. Just empty alleyways, quiet canals, imposing architecture. It's like you have the place to yourself for a bit.

Just started on S2, watched the first with a friend who recomended it. Loved the first one, second seems good so far.

The bits about manhome are really neat whenever they show up, it really highlights that Aqua isn't just an excuse to have a fantastic place as a setting, it's a very deliberate world. Everything is made to be not like manhome yet still retain so many aspects of it's culture.

The only negative thing I can think of is Athenas singing, it just feels a bit artificial and jammed into the series.

Well, I'm pretty sure you are who I meant now you've posted those pictures!

My walks were at less spooky times of day, though I ended up heading towards the other Vaporetto stop on the far side of the walkway. Turns out they've got a visitor centre about the MOSE project too. The graffiti on the wall has gone, though.

Good to hear you've been inspired! If you go to Venice, pick when you go carefully - summer has nice weather but is the peak tourist season, with high prices and absolutely rammed streets. Winter is cheaper, quieter, but you get more grey skies and Acqua Alta - though Venice has some beauty even then.

If you can, stay in the historic centre itself rather than the mainland - it lets you explore the city at times when the crowds aren't there, such as late at night. And have realistic expectations - it isn't Neo Venezia, but it's a beautiful city for its own merits.

Yeah man, I'm planning to go around February for my birthday, should it happen. It also gives some time to save up. I'll research the costs, though any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Okay, so I found this http://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-guides/italy-travel-tips/venice/
If I pay for groceries, and grab accommodation just outside the city, I'll spend about 170 a week on food/accommodation. For more tourist-y things, how much more should I save per-week? 200 more, 300?
