No, Eva saved him so he could eventually be used to get rid of the Lifemaker by killing Negi. Either way, it's more complicated and deeply connected to Negima than it needed to be. I try thinking about how it'd be to read UQ Holder for someone who didn't read Negima and there would be way too much stuff that's simply glossed over or difficult to appreciate since it actively takes focus away from the UQ Holder original cast (so you'd just get annoyed if you didn't have an attachment to Negima characters). A more tenuous connection would've allowed the series to better express the potential of its original cast and actually do more original plotlines.

But that's how harem start. The girls get interested in a character and it turns into love. I find it better handled than in Negima because there are not too much characters adn although it can slow don the pace a lot,it is nowhere near as bad as in Negima, with a lot of irrelevant girls who were getting the spotlight for pointless love stories, and the MC has an actual love interest this time. If Akamatsu had spent less time on this in Negima the ending would have probably been satisfying.
