The series is about monsters and what defines them, both literally and figuratively so it makes sense there's so much fucked up shit because every character has to deal with monsters or be one themselves. So sort of earnest I guess.
Still, it's not even the most violent/fucked up thing out there. Not even close. One of berserk's arcs was more violent alone than all of hellsing.
