I haven't watch the episode, nor do I know how licensing work in japan, but at least in America training courses (the MSF), the bikes they have are usually pretty light (usually 250 twins dual sports).
Learning how to pick up a bike is an essential skill. You can injury yourself trying to pick the bike up incorrectly, and even risk being pinned by the bike.

400cc, and there's a good reason for that. CB400SF make about 40 HP, deliver their power in a very linear fashion (without the vtec bullshit), they're not hilariously light but not too heavy either, they have next to no fairings, the seat height isn't too low but it's not too high for tiny japanese girls, it has a comfortable and confidence inducing riding position, and best of all it's fucking cheap and reliable so even if it gets smashed it won't break the school's bank to replace it. There's also the fact they've become the standard riding school bike, so all the extra bits like crash cages and the christmas trees you see on the front and back are all readily available for these bikes.
A Ninja two fiddy makes ~37 HP so it's not even that different in terms of power, but it comes in a cheaper and proven package.

Easily. Like all modern Hondas, it's a bit on the heavy side on the scales but it hides the weight well and you never feel that there's almost a foot of ground clearance. The suspension is amazing, there's a speed hump just as I leave my home which terrorised my previous bike and still feels like it's going to do in my car (you have to roll over it at under 10mph with the clutch depressed) and this thing will hit it at 40mph without any concern.
The cherry on the top is the exhaust note, it sounds burbly low down and aggressive in the highs, very atypical for a new Honda. My only complaint is that, fully laden, you get a slight speed wobble above 130mph.

If you want to see the comfiest town in Japan, go visit Tsuwano. Their natural spring onsen is great, the town has a traditional city center, I loved the time I spent there and wish I wasn't so poor so I could go again.
