Why? Why is this shit so bad already? Never since 7 have I ever dropped a Macross series so quickly. It's like the Macross people just jumped on-board the idol group bandwagon just to earn a few extra yen. The CGI and Valkyrie designs are some of the worst I'v ever seen and they're not even following their set principles of hero pilot (sort of) and and one main songstress. Not to mention it feels rushed as fuck. I feel betrayed.

Wasn't SDF Macross pretty heavy on the idol shit? It was really prominent and eventually played a huge part of the plot. Macross Plus was also very Idol. Wait, and so was frontier and it had two singers. Off the top of my head Macross 7 is probably the least idol since it was rock bands but even it had an idol group later in the series.
This is just slightly different in that the idols are now fighting stand-alone. Also Kawamori has been a huge idolfag since forever so I'm not sure how this is a surprise to you.

The main problem is there's no sense of danger going on. Yes there are battles and such, but you just can't feel the life and death struggle in the midst of the battles.
In Frontier, Zero, and even the original Macross you could sense the desperation, the fear, and the urgency to fight for one's, or someone else's, life in the first main battle. They showed it as a battle and really didn't mess around with that fact.
In Delta, however, they've glamorized it. The whole idol group singing amongst the battle may seem, at first, like a great idea, but it takes away from the whole, fight or die feeling that battle is. The idol group idea may have worked out had they not used them the way they have.
In Macross, there's a time and place for singing during a battle. But Delta is not it. As such it comes off as a cheap and meaningless way to make a money grab.

That was probably one of the top 3 dumbest things about this episode alone. Sure it was unique, and to tell you the truth I was expecting something like this to occur ever since the preview episode back in December. But it was still dumb as fuck. It like this series isn't taking itself seriously at all and is just playing around with the Macross name.

This is exactly what people were saying about Frontier, especially during the "hurr this is gonna be in high school" portion of the show and they were wrong. Even with this premise, it's still a Kawamori show so I would expect seriousness to happen eventually

And yet everyone else seems to think it started out a bit slow. They did a nice job of quickly introducing the characters, developing a little backstory that will be easy to get into later, and they clearly stated their motivation.
The first episode begins to climax when we finally see the power of the Walkure that heart ahoge and MC have been arguing about throughout the episode.
Then, It then shows you that this isn't going to be as easy as we all thought. There are going to be some challenges ahead as they introduce a squad of what we can only assume are villains who seem pretty bad-ass themselves.
And just when it seems like the reaction is going to occur and the day is going to be saved: BOOM! Shot down from the sky and epic song and cliffhanger until next week.
I thought the pacing was perfect for an introduction. I'm sure it will slow down with the audition episode next week.

I swear people have some sort of amnesia with Kawamori franchises. When Frontier came out, people were mad that it was too silly and insisted that Macross wasn't supposed to be silly. When Logos aired just recently, people insisted that it was out-of-place because Kawamori didn't write it himself and it was too silly, when it was much closer to Sousei's tone than Evol had been. And now again, they're acting like Macross is a mature adults-only franchise.

I'll admit they aren't my favorite episodes of that series, but Frontier still stands as a great continuation and the PROPER way to switch things up a bit. The only thing that's really changed is that now technology has advanced far enough that they can sing in person on the front lines thanks to drone technology.

I remember on /m/ someone posted a thread for discussing the reasoning for why the transforming aspect of the Valkyries worked for thrust without any hint of irony in his inquiry. The responses delved seriously into transformation and aerodynamics. Tomy sold transforming robot planes to children. Have a little self-awareness as to why the planes have legs. This is not mature stories for mature audiences like myself.
Plus was the end of Macross. Everything since has been on the level of Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko. At least Gundam still puts out quality in its franchise, Macross died a pauper's death.

I mean, it visually looks beautiful and the fights are great but everything else about it kinda sucks. I will say I didn't hate the first episode as much as I hated the preview (I know it's the same episode, it's just the first time seeing the idol shit was jarring if not outright upsetting).

At first I had my doubts. This is the first Macross series I ever pick and I didn't know it was about idols/music because I'm not a mecha fan (I'm more into romantic-slice of life stye series).
I thought Macross and Gundam were pretty much the same.
