If you haven't figured it out by now, anon, all anime are various expressions of "THE POWER OF YOUTH AND GROWING UP!" regardless of how it looks. It's almost all about really silly stuff like that.
With this wisdom you can see everything with new eyes. Adults become really cynical and start to want their youth and naivete back. And then they make shit like this, remembering moments in their life that seemed at the time to actually have real impact and importance, even if just to them. This contrasts to the everyday monotonous reality of adulthood.
It's all just an attempt to escape that and at least maybe go back to when everything was sort of new and extraordinary. Or lately it's been more about leaving this world behind and seeing something fantastical combined with YOUTH, which is still the most important implied theme everywhere.
It's all kind of sad, really.

To put it quite simply, it is a masterpiece. It might even be the closest to what could be considered the greatest anime. It's a beautiful coming of age story that wholly encompass what it means to become an adult and what it means to be human. The animation is flawless (as expected of this studio), so too is the music. Everyone who says they don't like it simply haven't seen it. End of story.
