It's not like I'm opposed to 80s anime, but I have watched very little and most of them are short OVAs. I've probably put more time into 70s anime, really. It's just so much work to start watching something that's really long, and there aren't that many must watch tv series from the 80s either. Maison Ikkoku is one I'm planning to watch, probably a few others, but Rose of Versailles is more praised than every 80s anime put together. There's just not that much that sticks out in modern anime communities.
90s, though. I'm working on that, really looking forward to starting on Nadia.

"Golden age" doesn't mean good, nor relevant. Golden age is just a term for the economical environment for the given industry, that there is optimism about the industry. When people say the 80s was the golden age of anime, that only means that people were willing to invest in anime and there was general optimism, it does not mean that the time period actually had any output of quality.
The 80s did produce som quality anime, but most of them are really anonymous in the modern anime communities. There is very little that is considered "must watch", like Rose of Versailles and at least a dozen 90s anime are.
I thought about buying some old anime on dvd from discotek.
Robot Carnival or some others look nice. Never watched Lupin III either.
