Light have to be aware of the existence of Lelouche. He prolly would come into contact via Zero's antics and recognize him as a rival for the shaping of the new world. He'd have to try to investigate him somehow, maybe manuevering his way into the Black Nights in order to get closer, acting as a loyal member while buying his time. If by some chance, he gets into his inner circle, he may come across an opportunity to see his face or listen into one of the conversations with CC and learn his first name. Through some snooping into the local information centers he finds a Lelouche is inrolled in a nearby school and writes his name which fails because its an alias.
If he has Misa, he could get her to write his name down, however, that would require Misa getting a look at his face, perhaps they enroll at their school and come across Lelouche so Misa can get peek. With the name in hand, Light goes to phone Misa for the real name when.

Meanwhile, as Light is making his way up the ranks of the Black Nights, Lelouche becomes aware of the supernatural heart attack killings happening across the world. He suspects it is a type of Geass and asks CC whats up to no avail. Frustrated, he uses his Geass to take control of several high ranking members of the National police and instructs them to investigate these killings.
Lelouch is smart and the chess match that played out between light and L could reoccur between Light and Lelouch. He is proficient at deduction though, he may overlook some details. The bits about the time of the killings and the theory he is a student may be obvious, as is the first heart attack killing in Japan. If Lelouch can narrow the list of suspects to Japanese students, he merely has to lay a trap for light in Japan in order to get the province, most likely through one of his Zero demonstrations.
At this point it comes down to whether Lelouch can come to suspect Light specifically through one of his mistakes. He is surprisingly dense to the happenings going on within the BK, so a infiltration by Light could make him blind to the enemy within, however, if he suspects a student in a particular province, he could just order the investigation of all profiled students in the area and whoever was killed by Light would tip him off.
As Light goes to call Misa, Lelouch uses his Geass on Light commanding him to obey his commands. He asks if he is the supernatural killer. Light confesses, and is then orders Light to kill himself. Light writes his own name in the Death Note.
If Misa announces herself as the second killer, Lelouch would obviously ask for his name and subsequent killing, however, if he cannot deduce there is a second killer. Misa kills Lelouch when she finds out Light is dead.
