Did you like it?
>>
I HATE IT
>>
It was mediocre but I am bound by the moral obligation of seeing it to the end
>>
>>139498660
The animation is pretty ok, great soundtrack and feels comfy to watch. But I disliked how the first case was rushed and they removed some great moments like Sahwit throwing his wig into Phoenix's face.

also, pretty fujoshit opening and great ending.
>>
I liked when Phoenix was blown back by Sahwit's yelling.
>>
>>139498660
It was shit. I expected it to be bad but no this bad
>>
>>139498881
The opening was the best part of the episode desu senpai
>>
How much will the anime cover? I stalled at Justice for All.
>>
I hope they drop the in-game animation references from 'constantly' to 'occasionally'. Otherwise it's okay but the real question is how well it handles the more serious scenes. It was passable for the light silly first case but yeah.
>>
I liked it and I don't get all the hate for it.
>>
I think they copied the game pretty well.
Some shitty things they hopefully make up for later.

The art/animation are kinda shit but the characters and the trial were handled quite well. How they pull ofc the more complex cases starting next episode will make or break it.

The OP and ED are pretty shit. The art and animation are bland. It lacks the energy of the games which made the court discussions consistently tense. And they rushed the first case. Not a good start, but I'm going to keep watching to see how it goes. At least it can't possibly turn out as bad as Danganronpa or Devil Survivor 2's adaptations.

A bad start to the season to say the least.

The case was rushed, the animation seemed subpar given the first episode is normally used as a first benchmark and overall it seems like they are focusing the effort on the wrong parts of the cases/story (which is kinda the whole key strength the series offers plot wise, whodunnit/howhedunnit/howdoweexposethemgoddamnit)

I really, REALLY hope this was just a matter of them wanting to get the "tutorial case" out of the way so they can focus on the more meaty overarching plot that starts in the first proper case of the game and follows through to the last case.

This. The animation is shit and repetitive and it tries far too hard to show of its game roots with these obtrusive overlays. But most importantly the case was far to simple and the caharcters too retarded. In a game this might not matter if the gameplay makes up for it, but in a tv series, if your story, characters, AND animation are all shit it's beyond saving.

Not sure to which degree you are baiting here (as you surely are) but if you ever wondered most of the original Japanese names were localized while trying to keep the puns alive.

Naruhodo = (a)w'... riiight. (I didn't understand one word there)
Ryuchi = Ryu is dragon but because English doesn't have it as a name they picked another mythological being, Phoenix (which also worked given his tendency to come back several times from cases that he should have lost hours ago).

It's one of the few cases where I believe the localization just nailed it with it resulting in a more enjoyable experience compared to if they had kept the Japanese names.

>>
>>139502702
Well at least in the American courts, the 5th amendment states you do not have to incriminate yourself against your will, or 'be a witness against themself'. Simply calling the defendant as the prosecution skewers the viewpoint of the jury since the average person may think 'why don't they speak for themselves? are they hiding something?' when they're simply exercising their 5th amendment right. This can result in a mistrial.
>>
>>139502884
>the dub
What dub?
>>
>>139502735
So because it's based of a game it's ok to put zero effort into animation and let the show look like shit? You don't need to be a genius to know that adopting a game 1:1 into a series is a bad idea.

The Japanese law system is batshit insane.

In fact, even though Phoenix Wright is supposed to be an over-the-top depiction of it can (sadly) be disturbingly accurate at times.

The defendant is basically screwed beyond help, the police is incompetent and while the law technically states "innocent until proven guilty" the prosecution enjoys all sorts of priviledges and advantadges that the defense can't even get a sniff of.

Part of it is that if the prosecution is considered part of the judicial branch (not sure if officially but at least in popular depiction) rather than the executive and them losing a case also reflects badly on the judges who pass the veredict have an incentive to also not lose face by having to basically admit a colleague colossally fucked up to the point they have to let a suspect go free without any charges.

Part of the reason the judge is depicted as being so aloof is that he is so old he has gotten into a phase of his life where he can just relax and let this Kabuki theater play out in front of him but also doesn't really care too much if he has to pass a not guilty veredict.

It's also why you will see him extremely pissed off at the police and prosecution if it turns out they fucked up in a major way (instead of it being a justifiable oversight/misinterpretation of the facts)
>>
>>139499827
This is how i feel as well.
>>
>>139503134
That's the attorney's job. He can testify and defend himself as much as he wants, but it's usually dumb to do that since Attorneys are usually smarter and know how to orate in court and interpret the law better than civilians. You are not required to defend yourself in court at any capacity.
>>
>>139503021
I did for example expect the woman to not say stuff like "It's important to believe in your clients innocence", or "You have to find a contradiction in the evidence!"
It's so fucking obvious that this is straight from the game instructions, where it might be ok as such, but as an in-character dialogue in a tv series it's beyond retarded, which is part of what I meant when saying you can't just adopt a game 1:1 into an anime.

Also because the plot follows him, he tends to give kind of symbolic "rebirth" to people around him, so to say (even if it's a little bit farfetched).
Every single of his rival prosecutors, for example. Arguably both Maya and Pearl. Many of his clients and witnesses finally resolve their life baggage in the court.

>>139503292
Normally, a harem anime has a really flat and one-dimensional MC. That's because by leaving out personality traits, the lonely betas in the audience are supposed to have plenty of room to self-insert and experience the ups and downs of a Real Japanese Cartoon Harem vicariously.

Something like this takes it another level, because even though a lot of other anime are based on games, this one has the distinct addition of being a more rational than emotional game. So by creating puzzles in the narrative, people can feel like they're playing the game all over again, and self-insert as "I am a very good player of this game."

And thus: We get the Dora the Explorer style narrative.

"Do YOU see any contradictions in the testimony???"
(*stands right in front of a contradiction in the testimony for 10 seconds*)

I actually enjoyed it because of just how exhausting it was.
I felt it really did justice to how hard it would be to catch that kind of guy in real life. Hell, the first two trials were basically just spent getting rid of the noise on the crime scene, draw out the information from the pair of angry cowboy cops and trying to prevent the judge from awarding a sentence, because there was so little information to actually go on. And then Edgeworth and Wright had to team up against him, and it was still a really close call, despite them both going full-on against him.
It made it really enjoyable to finally get him convicted. Also helped that he was a great villain and a cool character.
God, that case was great, in the most infuriating of ways.

I think you may have borked something up there pal.

I didn't mind the retirement itself but rather the fucking infuriating asspull they decided to use to put him in retirement given how much of a character assassination it was. Phoenix would have never presented that evidence. If that travesty of a case the end of the second game was taught us anything (and even the extra case on the first game for that matter) it was that Phoenix would rather pull every single damn technicality in the book than go the easy route and present evidence he wasn't sure of being 100% waterproof.

Him losing the case due to lack of prep time and/or his client being an ass would have had the same effect with him voluntarily dropping out due to taking care of an (effectively) child.

The games are much better written and more entertaining due to them being much longer. It's also satisfying as fuck when you can just tell that someone's lying to your face and you fuck their shit up. You can probably emulate them easily enough or if you have a 3ds buy them all for like 30 bucks.

the CGI was weird and seemed really out of place, it was especially jarring in this shot.
I don't think it's all that bad though. The first episode is always the worst, and I expected them to breeze though the first tutorial case in a single episode, so the pacing made sense to me.
What did catch me off guard was them ripping Mia's tutorial dialogue and actually having her say it. I'm fine with references to the game (like using the same poses as the characters' sprites), but that dialogue just seems to off to justify pulling it straight from the game. Although she has to have a generic pep talk w/ phoenix anyway, so it would have been slightly cheesy no matter how they did it. Plus I'm a shonenfag, so I'm used to it

>>
>>139499687

>>
>>139504620
But it was. It was complete and utter shit.
It doesn't even try to use the tools at their disposal to make it look interesting. It just replicates poses.
There's nothing about Payne being a rookie killer, Payne didn't even talk most of the time. There was no Turnabout, ever. Phoenix lands on his first job ever running and doesn't ever stop. The one time he's missing a bit of data is horrendously overplayed since he figures out an answer in no time. And then everybody says "yes, that's the right answer" and carries along. There's no impact. It all ends up feeling unearned.
Even if it's the first case it should have been done in two episodes, with one cliffhanger in between. It should have taken its time to establish the world a little, and a little more work on the characters.

It was awful.
>>
Honestly wasn't as bad as I expected.
>>
>>139502019
It's literally the tutorial case, no other case starts by showing you who did it and them openly stating that they need to frame someone
>>
>>139502496
>But most importantly the case was far to simple and the caharcters too retarded. In a game this might not matter if the gameplay makes up for it,
You should be aware that you basically just watched someone playing a video game tutorial level. The first case has no twists, it's just a quick exercise in how the mechanics work.
>>
>>139503256
I also noticed that during the games Phoenix generally lives in poverty despite winning a lot of cases, and Edgeworth... well, just look at his suit.
Does it actually have a basis in reality too, or is it just "the protagonist can't be too successful for immersion" thing? How much does being a lawyer even pay, anyway?
>>
>>139504676
Speaking of CGI, this would have been a great candidate for a full CGI show given the style of the 3DS games. We never would have gotten that seeing the budget of this show, though.
>>
>>139504676
I actually liked it being jarring. It gave it a gamey feel.
>>

for me it's because it came on a time where the VN genre was basically non-existent in the west, PW is not a100% VN more like a puzzle game where you read a lot, it was a new idea at least for the west whereas Japan shits VN and similars by the bunch each year.

it helped it a lot here, the same happened with 999, it bombed in Japan but was really successful (for a VN in the west) here.
>>
>>139504891
the first case is easy, a toddler could have handled it. I don't think they would have done a good job if they dragged it into two episodes since most of the time will be just spent on Phoenix bluffing and thinking in a still pose and silence in the courtroom.
And the world is established mostly on the next cases anyway. I found it nice that they gave us a peek at Phoenix childhood without completely spoiling it.
But seriously, I'm being honest, the first case is just fucking awful so I'm not really surprised that you hate it, even if for different reasons, because there isn't much that could be done besides getting it out of the way first.

>I liked the usage of giant holographic displays and monitors for when they presented evidence.
It was such a clever way of using the games concepts and applying them to movie language.

I think it's part of what makes me dislike the (first episode of) the anime.

It just feels lazy in comparison even if they are trying to stick close to the games.
They do not take advantadge of the fact that it's an anime and as such you need to use that audiovisual differently from the way it was used in the games to make it both interesting and compelling (both to fans and to new audiences).

I could potentially show the live action movie Joe McShmoe while just only warning that it's a mix of science-fiction and fantasy and wihle he'd consider it a weird movie it would be for the most part enjoyable, if not for at least the visual spectacle it provides.

Hm, let's think.
Justified: Larry, Maya, Edgeworth (though he could've paid him still, it's not like he lacks money), Lana (though she should've told her sister to get the money after what he did in the last trial), Maya (he totally should've taken the money at this point, though, but she probably didn't have much in the first place), Engarde, Iris (arguably)
No reason not to take money: 1-3, 2-1, 2-3 (double), 3-2, 3-3.

We get 7 against 5. Dammit. He actually has a lot of cases where he protects his friends.
I would still give him the money if I were in the place of these friends, though. I mean, the guy just acquitted you, it's just one of many ways to show I'm thankful, and he probably likes to eat occasionally too.
>>
>>139505471
>And any case that dealt with this guy.
You gotta love how von Karma is able to bullshit so thoroughly without even the slightest hint of remorse.

Edgeworth would at least cling to technicalities to be at ease with his own conscience when he was bullshitting while also arguing with himself that it was the defense's job to prove if his bullshit was actually wrong
>>
Haven't played any of the games, but I thought it was pretty ok. Made more sense than that detective show with the trap a few seasons ago, and Wizard Barristers. Helps I'm dumb as shit too so I have no idea why the time was wrong etc.

To be fair, he feels indebted to a lot of them.
He wouldn't have become a lawyer if it wasn't for Larry, Miles and Mia bailing him out at different points in his life and given he cannot repay Mia's debt in full given she's dead he decides to transfer over that one to Maya acting as a sort of big brother figure the way Mia was one for himself

Also, regarding Lana it probably paid off long term given the help he or rather his disciple gets from said sister years later.

Yeah, but still, being indebted is about him taking these cases in the first place and overworking on them, even against the client's wishes sometimes, but not paying him after that just because "you're already in my debt" honestly just sounds wrong.
I kinda wanted to play the "never work for free" card, but honestly, I can't blame him for taking these cases without discussing the payment. All of them were completely justified. It's just, I would expect his friends to pay him afterwards even if he didn't discuss the payment at all beforehand.

Plus it wouldn't make for a very compelling game unless you want go through a dozen small claims and misdemeanor cases were both parties are flinging shit at each other for what are basically things the law barely covers in a manner detailed enough to get a clear-cut veredict.

>No, I get why he's doing that. I'm talking about the people he defends, their viewpoint.
Well, Larry is an obvious case. I doubt he genuinely feels it's anything but a friend's duty (the same way he'd probably try to save Phoenix life if it came to that but wouldn't ask Phoenix to pay the medical bill if he [Larry] got injured).

Maya is already covered given how she spends the next few months helping Nick out.

Miles is the more interesting case. I think that it would be an insult to Phoenix to even suggest it, especially given what they go through in the trial. He probably would give Phoenix a blank cheque if he needed it but feels it would be wrong to put a price on what Phoenix did for him instead of filing it under "favours I need to return to Phoenix even if it means going to hell while greased up in oil and gunpowder".

Lana is the only one where it feels out of place but I guess it just is a bit of a weird situation either way.
I doubt any of the parties involved wants a payment to happen. Lana is more than happy to serve her term in prison for the crimes that can rightfully attributed to her and her sister is in a bit of an emotional mess so if it was ever brought up Phoenix probably just told her to just focus on studies and pay him back in kind if he ever needed help from her as a professional which is more or less what ends up happening

I mean, sure, maybe Lana had the money to pay for it but Phoenix surely felt her sister was going to need every single penny she could get to finish her degree
>>

second case was bullshit, I stopped playing for 2 months before actually getting to finish it, the rest of the game was fine

What I loved about Investigations is not actually the cases themselves. Though AAI2 was really good.
What I love is just the difference in how you feel during it.
With Phoenix gameplay is often frantic and tense bullshittery, you constantly lack information to completely crack the case, and you have to bluff as much as him to keep on going. Sure, there are moments when you have a good idea what's happening while Phoenix doesn't or even are going too fast for the game to acknowledge your logic, but it's still more often than not trying to think up things on the fly, since a lot of information you actually can only gain in court, and police actively prevents you from gaining it out of court. But yet there's always a moment where it just turns from frantic bluffing into an actual case, and suddenly everything feels really easy and natural.
With Edgeworth, it's completely different. More often than not you actually have a good understanding of what has happened before the argument even begins, and it just feels like you're smoothly sliding the path of logic, at your own pace, everything calculated for. The Logic system also helps that, since it literally forces you to think about the logic behind your argument before it even begins.
I really loved that difference in tone, and how subtle that was.

It wasn't necessarily bad, but it was just a lesser version of both games. Puzzles weren't as good as Layton's, trials weren't as good as Phoenix's. And it pretty much had Layton handle everything with Phoenix being his somewhat incompetent sidekick.

Honestly I feel that's intended (given the Japanese pop culture view on the justice system).

The defense has to dismantle the prosecution's logic and prove said logic and the evidence supporting it are in contradiction or shoddily thrown together without rhyme or reason.

The prosecution needs to interpret the evidence they have at hand, create logically sound and internally consistent narrative the defense cannot poke holes in by virtue of which the suspect gets nailed.

The thing is that in the Japanese law system (regardless on how much this is actually ignored in real life) they are supposed not try to actually prosecute someone unless they are pretty damn sure they are right about their guilt to the point that while on paper you are innocent until proven guilty the trial tends to be more of a case of "how guilty are you exactly on a scale to 0 to 100?"
Both extremes are considered outliers because there is a built-in assumption the case would have been dropped beforehand if the prosecution wasn't reasonably sure the suspect isn't guilty at least on a very basic level (involuntary accidental homicide that suspect maybe even couldn't reasonably avoid [disregarding self-defense] vs premeditated murder with several additional charges).

Because it's a Professor Layton game that sometimes features this Phoenix Wright guy who doesn't really do much except let Layton explain how he's already solved everything.

Really, I would've forgiven everything if they just Phoenix be the only one who figured out Espella wasn't actually Bezella in the final case. Just leave him this one moment of revelation to turnabout her suicide. Maybe even have Layton himself be doubtful of it, until he's proven otherwise.
But they couldn't even give him that. Even here, Layton already freaking knew and asked him to please convey the message for him.
The case where Layton turned into a golden statue, except not was literally the best one. Figure out why.

Maya is unsure of herself as a medium.

Her kissing her astral self is her physical form connecting with her spirituality and coming to like herself as she is.

This was kind of her character arc when she ran away back to Kurain village at the end of AA1 because she felt like she was completely useless to Nick and she wanted to become a better medium as she is heir to the village.

I thought it was obvious.

That's a real shame y'see
because he's such a good character y'know?
Remember when franziska used to sit on his lap and call him unky boo boo?
For real though, Blaise was one of my favorite characters in AAI2, the fact that he has all the makings of a typical Ace Attorney final boss, but actually isn't one helps drive home just how good the real final boss is. Plus he gave manfred von karma his only penalty on top of having a super good theme

Seriously though, how the fuck DD is the DARK AGE OF THE LAW when Manfred won without autopsy report.
>>
>>139509038
Wasn't that the point though? That he really didn't care about maya and just wanted to spoil their plans right in their faces as 'revenge'?
>>
>>139512130
Yes. But some people think that Godot executing his vengeance plan is a plot hole. You have no idea how many people I've met who claimed that.

Hobi nick was based as fuck.
I wish we got more games with him as mentor
>>
>>139512093
I think the moment the three-day-rule was first established, it already would be enough to call it "the dark age of the law".
Apparently nobody just wised up to it until it was literally thrown into their faces.

This.

Personally I thoroughly enjoyed case 2 of AJ even though it was not particularly strong one. It was just a good setting and I wish there was at least one more game with Apollo as lead, Trucy as assistant, Phoenix as ghost-lawyering mentor, Ema as detective and Klavier as pros.

Phoenix's wits are too dry for me to imagine him hugging Edgeworth.

But I bet Maya and Pearls constantly try to sandwich him as long as Maya remains faithful to her special someone.

there was case where guy was locked in jail for 28 yrs as death row, bailed, fought 22 more years to get not guilty. The Japanese lawyer union came to help him out on this one, and gov payed 400 yen per day he was in jail. Ofcourse in that jail time all his family passed away in sorrow and he couldn't live a life from age 24 till 75 or so, and he passed away 9 months after he won the case

Hate that I borderline have to force myself through the games because I really like the writing.
Constantly end up trying to present evidence before the game wants me to or get hung up on what exactly it wants me to do so I end up looking up the solution because I don't want to game over and have to mash through half a trial to get back to where I was.
