For anime VAs anyways. Back when anime magazines were a thing, there were plenty of attempts at fame for them. But for western works, I see it as something entirely different. Tara Strong is treated like an angel after MLP, and for Disney works there's often interviews and bonus content set aside for the actors. You're right about the prestige, but there's still some business. Just not for anime.

The issue is that anime voice acting in the US pays bottom of the barrel rates. The voice actors who are smart join unions, and the ones with actual talent get snatched up by bigger companies.
For example, Steve Blum was a huge name in anime dubbing back in the late 90's/early 00's, but now he's almost exclusively in AAA vidya and cartoons with real budgets behind them like Star Wars Rebels. He stopped doing anime dubbing after Tiger & Bunny, and now the the only dubbing roles he still does are role reprisals, like Orochimaru and Kyohei in Durarara.
So, as a result, the dubbing studios are largely left with the people who are at a dead end career-wise because they can't do any better. Grouped together with voice directors that couldn't direct their way out of a paper bag, and you get bad dubs.
