No, they didn't, it was an asspull. Suddenly the bad guy can simply, and very precisely, erase his enemies' memories all at once with no once noticing (also turn every monk into stone, why not). If he always had that power he could simply make them forget about the spear and be done with it. And if the critters can devour any memory why stop at erasing just the main characters? They could cause more chaos just fucking around with their memories at random.
It was a fucking stupid plot device to go through all the characters and reintroduce them again, and also the worst and cheesiest writing in the series since that part where Ushio's harem took turns brushing his hair and remembering what happened in their chapters.
