It's an objectively mediocre show with consistent QUALITY especially in S1, a plot that's pretty fucking stupid and basically makes up shit as it goes along, and rather nakedly relies on its big names to draw in viewers.
That being said, it's one of the most fun and enjoyable shows with ridiculously over-the-top action scenes and an amazing soundtrack (if you like j-pop), and everyone behind it is clearly having a blast making it, which shows from the myriad mecha and videogame references to the seiyuu jokes to the attack cards straight out of fucking Touhou. Also it's okay to rely on your VAs for sales when that VA is Nana Mizuki because Nana Mizuki is a living goddess (and her character is almost literally just Nana Mizuki with blue hair and swords).

Symphogear G was entertaining at least because despite the stupid plot and poorer characterisation, you still couldn't see what shit was coming. Hell, G episode 10 is still my favourite.
GX had the naff characterisation of G but with none of the thrill. It didn't finish off anything it started really, with the only thing I really like character wise was going more in depth in how screwed up the Kazanari's are. During this time, it never even had much fun to cover it up.
I really hope we see a bit more of Fudou next season, he's a real piece of shit. At least now they know they have 2 seasons they can get more character interaction in.

Eventually the geahs are faced with Garie, and are ready to finish this once and for all. But when they all go to IGNITE, it backfires again because of their unresolved issues. Garie uses this opportunity to kiss each Geah one at a time, stealing all the power they've gained from IGNITE.

The other problem with GX is that it felt too much of a clean slate. With G there was still a lot of stuff answering hooks from S1.
The moon was a major one, but things like Tsubasa being overly concerned about Hibiki dying from Relic Cancer made sense because she might have stopped blaming herself for Kanade, she still really didn't want to lose another team-mate. Relic Cancer was a good plot point too, but I think it should have been saved for the final season to push Hibiki out of the symphogear life. Something about her still having really good sync rates despite not being a fusion feels a bit off to me, dunno.
Chris was good for the most part in season 2, answering her feelings of being an ex-villain and guilt over Solomons Cane. Sure, she might have gone a bit retard about it, but whatever, that cliffhanger was nuts.

madoka is simply very condensed due to the 12 episode structure. So any development the characters get is also compressed and stuffed into plot arcs and interactions with other characters at the same time.
For example kyouko's backstory also serves as a lesson for and contrast to sayaka and tells us more about unintended consequences of wishes and the whole hope/despair balance thing.
It's easy to lose sight of one of those when you're also bombarded with the others.

It's not just Carol, though I disagree that she was a bad villain. Her intentions were outright stated at the end that the world that her father saved with a miracle had betrayed him, so she in turn was going to kill miracles and kill the world in revenge.
I think Garie and Micha were outright fun to watch as they didn't have to shoehorn in WAHH PITY ME drama that all the other ex-villain geahs dragged in. They were smug and snarky knew how to get in peoples heads, and Micha even had an IGNITE form.

You're right that GX feels totally unconnected to the rest of the series, and I hope that's something that 4 and 5 get back on top of. It's not just physical stuff like the moon; whatever happened to the series' motif of understanding different people's points of view, and the whole "is world peace through coercion just" thing that both of the previous seasons had going through them? It really feels like the shell of a Symphogear story, something that looks basically like Symphogear but didn't pick up on anything below the surface.
It doesn't help that there were plenty of obvious ways it could have tied in to previous seasons that weren't taken; for instance, Carol's plan could have been about remaking the world (as Maria even speculated about in one episode, which makes me wonder if this wasn't an abandoned plot idea) instead of just being a crazy bitch.
And on a side-note why have Chris suddenly kouhai-obsessed (and with all of her development for that thrown into an OVA, to boot) rather than playing up the similarities between her and Carol's parental losses? Part of the problem with the Precure episodes was that they were really just about the character in question's issue, without tying it in to the main plot thematically.

Don't do focus characters at all. Everyone's personal issues should play into each other and create a group dynamic that serves as the actual plot focus, not individual issues divorced from wider context.
Also, I'd much rather see new developments than constantly trying to rehash and redo old idea that really just need buried. Learning a bit more about Tsubasa's current situation would be good, but Bikki needs something new, and I think that Chris's upcoming graduation would be a good springboard for that. Chris overcame her big issue already - she'll need a new one sooner or later, but for now let her relax and play support to someone else's for a little.
