So I went back and rewatched Index S1 and 2 for the Kamikoto scenes and thought the pacing was really bad in both. Also Mikoto's voice was harder and less pleasing to the ear at first, she sounds much better in Railgun and the bridge scene in Railgun S was much better than the original version.
You can tell all the VAs improved and Arai most of all. She was pretty good to begin with but she really stepped up her crazy and it worked well.

Personally i went Railgun > Index > Railgun S > Index II. It was perfectly fine for me, and i don't believe i missed anything.
I prefer the Railgun series but Index is pretty damn good too. The magical shit can get a little tiresome at times though,like the arc where they travel to Italy and the ice ships.

I don't get why Kamikoto is so popular when the theme of the relationship is "she watches his back as he walks away" with absolutely no indication that he will ever turn around and see her reaching for him. Even the girl herself does not believe this will happen, even if she might want it to.
Kamachi even says he wants her to keep chasing his back without adding "so maybe he'll turn around and see her" or giving any implication that such a thing will ever happen.
She's chasing after the back of a guy even she knows she will never get. The majority of non comedy scenes they have together boils down to "I'm sorry, Misaka. I'm going on ahead. Without you."

I've only read up to NT6 so forgive me if im missing something important, but to me it works based on the clash between the two who are very different in many respects. Not just from personality, social standing and routine, but also the way their powers work, with Mikoto's being well known, versatile, flashy and quite safe, where as Touma's is inconceivable, limited, subtle and requires him to put himself in harms way as a matter of course.
As for chasing his back, its my hope that he will inspire her to become stronger, maybe gaining a controllable power up similar to her exterior transformation.
But than again that would mean development for existing characters rather than pulling a few more out of Kamachi's ass than letting them die or fade into irrelevance.

If Mikoto gets a power up, it won't be because Touma inspired her. It will be because Aleister did something to make it happen. To add to that, any power up she might get will likely still be unstable even if Aleister himself does it, so she'll have to be rescued.
