He was literally the cornerstone of the entire plot. Were it not for him things would have been fucked at so many points and he had so much depth as a character. His relation ship with Joey and Yuge, as well as the romantic sub-plot with Joey's sister were all really interesting points that kept the viewer wanting more, I really don't see how anyone could dislike Tristan, let alone think he's the worst character in anime history.

Pretty much. I remember when the show aired; people I knew detested her with a passion usually reserved for brutal dictators, seriously wanted her dead, and took unnerving glee when she did die. While I wasn't exactly fond of her either, I took no joy in her death, and not only because at that point at that point life had shat on her just as hard as anyone else.
She's also a very good example of people not being able to distinguish between a bad character and a character they dislike. She might have been a pretty extreme example of the "people from X group killed Y important person to me, therefore everyone in X group are evil and must die" archetype, but in spite of that she was a realistic character who develops and changes in believable ways. I dislike her as a person, but as a character she plays her part well.
