The whole tuberculosis subplot. Once that gifl came back into his life the movie switches to slow drama/romance and stops dead.

I saw this in theaters, it was full of normalfags, hipsters, and moms with packs of kids. When this scene came up a bunch of people started laughing and making sarcastic comments, some even straight up left the movie. It was embarrassing to think that for a lot of the people this movie is representative of anime as a whole with all its cheesy romance and revisionist history.
