Don't feel bad OP, just finished watching it too.
It had a lot of the shit people always get caught up on, which is the reason why everyone's saying it's shit. That last revival's setup was good up until the point Satoru screamed, Kayo's mom was too inhumane of a character, and so on.
But it was still great. If you manage to get attached to the characters and actually don't care about the fact that the teacher's the killer, or about Kayo's mom's personality because you actually felt it brought Kayo's abuse more realism, it was very engaging and, overall, really good.
The worst thing for me was that they really didn't make a big deal out of child abuse and that after Kayo's mom got caught by the child protection agents, they forgot about her just because she teared up after meeting with her mom.
But hey. In the end, what matters when it comes to liking anime is your capacity to overlook a show's flaws in order to enjoy its good things.
I personally really liked it. Still don't think I'd compare it with Steins;Gate though.
It had one of the best first episodes in recent years, but that only really hurt it in the end

I just finished episode 12 about 5 minutes ago. I really enjoyed it, definitely one of the better things I have watched in awhile.
I couldn't get very far into Steins;Gate (maybe 4-5 episodes?) Perhaps I need to give it another go.
It started so, so strong, but ultimately fell off a cliff into mediocracy. Sahme though, felt like it had unfulfilled promises.

Why do you say it seemed that way? The whole dialogue was meant to demonstrate the teacher became emotionally attached to Satoru. He felt like only Satoru really "got" him, but in the end he feels the urge to kill again and lets the wheelchair go.
It was a fair assumption by Satoru to think that, on the last day before they can stop visiting the girl with cancer, the teacher would try to kill him. The phone call was just how he would let Kenya West know.
Doesn't seem like the author didn't know how to end the story to me.
