What do you guys think I'm of the new series? I've never watched a Precure before but it's pretty nice. Basically I like to spend my free time watching little girls become best friends, so this has been enjoyable so far. Do these things tend to go anywhere grand, or is it like slowly escalating monster of the week stuff forever?

Every quarter or so we usually have a hype moment where some shit happens, but the grandest moments are usually either the mid-season climax (mid 20s, where a new Cure appears or the Precure team gains a new power) or the finale (final 4 eps sketch, where everything is at stake)
But most of the time, Precure is more of a comfy slice-of-life series with a 5 minutes MOTW fight at the end.

Different seasons have aspired to different levels of grandure, but in general, every year ramps up to one mid-season climax (at 21-23ish) and the actual finale where the world is in peril. There are sometimes smaller dramatic bumps at 10, 30, and 40, but that'll depend on the year, whether they have another mid-season Cure to introduce, etc etc.
Everything but the lead-up to climaxes (which are usually around 3 episodes) is usually very low-key with friendship building, moral lessons and tiny little character developments. It sometimes doesn't even matter whether you watch them in order.

What's wrong with Maho is that they focus too little of bad guys. They just turn up, spwn MOTW and left. I still couldn't differentiate Batty and Sparda's character trait and Kameks is just another Kintolesky clone with less humor. The motivation of the lots are only to do what Lich command them, except we don't know anything about the Lich either. I only can hope that they purposely keep the lich mysterious to make the reveal more important, instead of just him being random 1-dimensional evil overlord like Pierrot, Dyspear or Dune.

I really liked Splash Star but I'm not really getting in Mahou much, mostly because the magical world setting is boring as anything. The little realistic side stories are a lot more entertaining to me, like Saki's baseball glove, Mai losing the art contest, or some of the minori episodes. It's really hard to care about pegasus families and mermaids.

Not necessarily. People went out to see the Doki movie (box office on the left), just as much as HC/Suite/Smile, but DVD/BD sales (right, top) were pretty bad by comparison. Still better than Suite, but you'd think with that much theatre popularity, those sales would reflect that.
To be fair, that's not necessarily a condemnation of the Doki movie exactly. But it does mean something went wrong on their watch, whether it's that second cour crash after Ace's reveal, or Mana-fatigue, or maybe even just poor marketing that year. A bigger-than-usual toy market the same year might affect parents too, I dunno.

Toei doesn't spend money on the marketing of Precure, so less and less people watch it in the morning.
Why would Precure be anything more to Toei at this point than a buffer to Dragon Ball, a show on a completely different station?
If they don't put the marketing in, they can't expect positive growth. It's like how they've forsaken the internet, if they don't accept that more and more people watch TV on the internet; they can't expect positive growth. So they just stagnate.
