As someone who really liked the game, I've heard about why the anime is bad and avoided it specifically because just reading about it pissed me off. If I were to watch it I'd probably seethe with rage at how badly they fucked it up, so I'm saving myself the trouble. I did hear there was a manga though, and that it was significantly better than the anime. Going to look into that soon.

Dubs tend to be pretty good when the anime's setting takes place outside of Japan. The exceptions are Ghost in the Shell and Samurai Champloo.
