My problem with it is simply that it's not much of anything we haven't seen before, both in anime and manga forms.
Jonathan is just a big guy with a goofy face and a stupidly large body who fights for Morals™ and Justice™. Zeppeli is your standard sensei who dies conveniently at the protagonist's time of greatest need. Everything up to the boat is more or less the same stuff you see if you read any generic shonen manga.
tl;dr Jonathan has barely any character, the action is weak and familiar, and the characters bar Speedwagon fall extremely flat.

I think Jotaro's death hit me the hardest in part 6. For the entirety of part 3, he was a pretty calm guy. A bit edgy, but it was fine. In part 4 and 6 he was the wise one. Actually I don't think time stop was even explored fully enough in the original manga or the anime (though the OVA, the PS1 game and SBR toyed around with it a lot more). If anything the movie should specifically be about the time stop ability and Jotaro/DIO's limits with it, experimenting with every possible scenario they could fit into maybe a 1h30m film. Think the magnet trick or the knives but a dozen other creative uses of time stop like those.
Throw in a good budget and it'd be the most action-packed strategic JoJo battle in the series' history.

after Part 6, Araki's publishers were like "alright, this was a good ending point and your fans have had enough, why don't you do something new instead?"

The Kakyoin speech built the delinquent part of Jotaro's character and showed that he was still a good guy deep down. What's wrong is that after that, we never really got to see Jotaro doing delinquent things, and that breaks the show don't tell rule.
