It's worth giving the VN a shot. The first route is shit, but the second route has plenty of Rin and the third route has plenty of Illya. Just a warning though: VN Illya is a lot different than Prisma Illya.

UBW and HF are only good in context. Shirou's development is the most satisfying part of the VN and there's no way to get a real sense of his development if you haven't played through Fate. Reading a wiki page isn't going to cut it.
