I am 19 episodes in, and i simply can't do this anymore to myself. I've been laughing non stop at how bad this is. Literally only the first episode was good.

I am not even talking about the insultingly bad animation. The whole setting and story dont make sense. The charcaters reactions dont make sense. It's a fucking mess no matter how you look at it.

But yeah OP, the difference between YYH and a newer Togashi work like HxH is pretty striking. He got a hell of a lot better with time, and I have a hunch that marrying another mangaka positively influenced his craft as well.

I think the biggest improvement in HxH's writing is the lack of interference from Jump. When he finished off YYH he complained that he couldn't 'deconstruct' the characters and I think that's what he attempted with HxH (I know deconstruct is a dirty word on /a/ but that's what he said).

Pretty good shonen, though I think it wasted a ton of its potential. Instead of a cool adventure stoy exploring the grotesque and spiritual with some fighting, which it hinted at being initially, it shifted into being a bit by-the-numbers despite the strength of Togashi's characters and designs. Still good up until Yusuke's bullshit demon revival.
I think YYH is a lot more interesting on a pure conceptual level than HXH.
