I felt like Garden of Words was a lot better than 5 cm per second. 5 cm per second was simplistic.
Garden of Words was actually deep while not being opaque. It managed to touch on the realities of growing up in a broken family, to be taking a path through life that is unusual, feelings of isolation and loneliness, and how we change our interactions when we lose the context clues that society provides for how we should behave.

I specifically pursue this kind of anime. 5 cms Per Seconds is actually somewhat disappointing in how simplistic and in the end hopeful it was.
