Naota falls in love with a Haruko

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. I say, I personally hate it but it's not THAT bad. The issue is it's extremely different to GunBuster in tone. If you want more of GB I wouldn't bother. The show itself is okay if you can divorce the two but I went in expecting GB and hated it.
Honestly the ending is pretty worth it even if you just want a GB sequel.

FLCL was entirely carried by Naoto's coming of age which was completely resolved by the end of it from a narrative perspective. The science fiction was so much circus to just be a metaphor for puberty. It wasn't what carried the show.
If they were to continue with Naoto, it'd either be restarting the coming of age, which means reducing the first season to meaninglessness. Or it genre shifts, which means we won't really be getting FLCL
Or they can do what they're apparently doing, which is jump to some other kid (girl this time because cute girls sell and this is clearly just a cash grab) and do a coming of age in high school, which realistically is just going to be making FLCL again, rather than actually adding to the story (which was finished).
