What was your gateway anime?
At various stages of my life, Totoro then Gurren Lagann then K-On!
Watched DBZ and Naruto as a kid.
Few months ago felt like rewatching Naruto, i did, talked about it with some friends and they recommended me Code Geass. After watching CG ive been binge-watching a shitton of anime.
I just started watching the season 1 of naruto.
And I watched that episode of Shinobu Time that she tells her story a lot of times

Azumanga Daioh...
K-On!
>>139145420
Sailor Moon or Card Captor Sakura. Though I think Detective Conan or Lupin the Third were the 1st that caught my interest.

The first episode of CCS is so comfy. That dream at the beginning.
Mine are
vvvv
K-On! Lucky-Star, Azumanga Daioh Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka? Love Hina.
Little Nemo
I don't think I ever had a gateway anime. I just sort of started watching a shitload of anime all of a sudden in 2009. There wasn't anthing that hooked me into it, it just kind of naturally happened.
The first one I watched was Lucky Star though. Probably because it's so alien to shows in terms of presentation.

Thinking with my dick since day 1.
>>139145420
Cyborg Kuro-chan, Ranma Half and Dadada

Fuck me.

(your) Pic related was my first manga. A lot of years after, Shingeki no Kyojin was my first subbed anime. (I still like manga more though)
Elven Lied
>that nyu nyuu
>that closing
This and Yu Yu Hakusho
Elfen Lied
Looking back the anime was just mediocre at best. I still feel the manga was pretty decent.

As a kid:
>DBZ
>Sailor Moon
>Robotech
>various other daytime Toonami shows in the mid-90s
A tad bit older:
>Elfen Lied
>Cowboy Bebop
>Evangelion
I had seen the dub of Yugioh and Cardcaptor Sakura as a kid but my real gateway was Bleach in 2005.
SAO. I remember loving it and now I can only look back and cringe at my shit taste.
This was the first anime I remember fully watching and being invested in.
Mion was my waifu for the longest time. Still love her.
I decided to watch Bebop on a whim to try out this "japanese anime thing". I liked it so much that I needed to watch another series to fill the hole I felt after completing in. You know the rest.
Fuck you Spike for getting me into this shitty hobby, you glorious bastard

they should definetly reboot the anime and make it cannon til the end.

Japanese toy commercials sure are great, huh.

The usual stuff you watch on the TV as a kid like DBZ and pokemon, but the actual real gateway anime that "awakened" made me want to watch more and more was Darker Than Black.
I think I saw like a gif of it somewhere, thought it was cool so I looked it up and it kind of snowballed from there. No regrets.
This is probably gonna sound like a blog and out me as a newfag, but here we go.
I was born in 1990. My earliest anime memories are DBZ, Sailor Moon, and Pokemon. I didn't separate them from regular cartoons in my head though, and that was the reality for me up until about 2007.
Before that, I basically just watched whatever was on TV, so Card Captors, Inu Yasha, .hack//Sign, Gundam Wing/SEED, and the like.
2007 was when I became aware of anime as a separate "medium", because my sister got into it. At the time YTV was running FMA and Death Note, so those are probably my first anime that I recognized as anime.
My next step was in high school when one of my friends turned out to be one of you guys and he convinced me to start "binging" entire anime. We started watching shows that he had burned to blank DVDs like Lucky Star, Ichigo Mashimaro, Kyo no go no ni, and Kodomo no Jikan. This was my introduction to things that only exist in anime. (Like moe and lolicon).
I started "binging" things on my own starting with Code Geass and Gurren Laggan on Funimation's youtube channel somewhere around 2009.
That was about the situation until 2013 when I realized that currently airing anime was subbed on a weekly basis, and, starting with the second season of Oreimo, started watching anywhere between 15 and 25 shows in a season, and avoiding streaming as much as I could. That continues to this day.
My point in saying this is that I don't really know where in there the "gateway" was, or if there even is one.
The first anime I watched was the original season of Pokémon. Then Cardcaptor Sakura, Flint the Time Detective, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Beyblade, Cyborg 009 etc.
The first anime I watched subbed was Tokyo Mew Mew. Then Wolf's Rain, Death Note etc

Well FLCL is already getting something new. Maybe it actually could happen.
>>139151250
Hahah dude me too.
>>139151815
Is there any anime with as strong story that compels people to keep watching it as Death Note?
Most anime these days seem to be just a series of sketches with moe/comic focus.
>>139145420
.hack//sign.
All the animes I saw was trash on toonami until I discovered moe and realized anime was good
>>139145420
I got into anime from Jump Super Stars, and I mained the fuck out of Train Heartnet.
Earliest memories were watching Saint Seiya when I was a kid in South America. That and DBZ got me into anime.
A whole bunch of late 90s girls and guns stuff that happened to be around on DVD at the time.
