People thought, genre-wise, that this was either a murder mystery or a romance with Kayo and thus were disappointed when it wasn't really either of those things.
I enjoyed it well enough. Shame about the manga cuts, it fails to clarify a lot of Satoru and Yashiro's characters by the story's end because of the 12 episode length. I think as far as audio/visuals are concerned, however, it was superb.

While it did have a few pants on head retarded things added in (Airi's explanation on why she trusted Satoru, Kayo getting together with trap-kun of all people, Satoru landing on a cushion we all saw coming, to mention a few) I think it was overall pretty good, and definitely up there as one of my favorite shows these past seasons. It could have been longer to flesh out some of the characters, but what can you do when all you've got is 12 episodes to work with. If you've read the manga, you're good either way. I thought the Airi reunion was a bit weird, however. Would have liked it more if she was standing in front of him when he followed the butterfly, lowered her camera and said something like "Hey, don't I know you from somewhere?" or some bullshit, and there, end. Just to imply the "Re:Re" had taken effect in some way or another, I guess.

Yup, it had some charm and it felt like things were happening for a reason, after that it felt like the writer wasn't sure of were to take the story, which is a shame because I loved the whole Kayo deal, there was something magical there and they just wasted the potential.
Still, really liked the show even after recognizing all the flaws it had.

The anime improved the manga in pretty much every feasible way, including cutting out some superfluous stuff, adding cohesiveness and meaning, and making the ending flow so much better with the rest of the story. It's dragged down by its source material, but the effort the staff puts into making it work despite that really shines through, and I really appreciate it.
Still the best directed show of the season, even if it's not my favorite.

I had this feeling as well. The way the scene at the end was composed in which the publisher guy called Satoru "sensei" and how the camera was only showing his coat at first which had basically the same color as Yashiro's in 1988 was probably hinting at that. I don't know why people even people hate this show. It's defentily not a masterpiece but it certainly reminded me why I watch anime and love Japanese animation culture and industry. The Airi stuff in the anime is bad. A great part of the chemistry between Airi and Satoru earlier is he thinks she's a dumb Millennial. Making her 21 ruins that, she was probably rubbed raw by pizza man.
Also, the anime made no secret that sensei was the villain. What it did was cast enough doubt on that for you to speculate it was a third party, future Satoru, Yuuki, or some other crazy theory.
My biggest complaint is Yashiro is a Mary Sue. He's a teacher, so how does he afford all of these cars, the ability to woo any woman and fight with Child Protection Services, and avoid detection despite murder following every place he's lived?

You probably thought Breaking Bad's finale was completely boring too huh? Sometimes having a safe and predictable ending that gives closure is the best thing. Especially with the route the anime took after revealing Sensei as the killer this was the best possible outcome. It's very satisfying and I have no complaints. It isn't a pure mystery story, though. The killer could have been some random asshole with the focus of the story being how Satoru gets a second chance at his childhood, because his future as a failed mangaka and pizzaboy sucks.

Dude gets a totally shit ending, because it's just garbage writing to try and hint that he stands any fucking chance with Airi, a girl in this timeline who is a total stranger. Which I suppose is the most realistic depiction of Japanese life in anime ever, but people don't watch anime for realism very much. Especially not with multidimensional time travel is a plot device.

I love anime but this is something that always takes away some of the fun. Even really good manga have that up to the point where characters are even talking about what they're about to do even when it's clear. It doesn't make me dislike a series but I think it would be way better if some things were just hinted or that they just happen without an explanation which you don't need since you see what's actually happening. Anime would also get some some re-watch value that way since you'd have to watch it again to find all the hidden stuff or symbolism you didn't notice while watching it for the first time.

Even the seasonal harem LN adaptions have one thing or another going to them. And Earsed isn't exactly a mystery show, like the director said its a human drama show disguised in mystery. Sure, you may have a lot of movies with masterpiece twists and writing but I guess it's hard to have a memorable charcters like Satoru, Kayo, Yashirou, Airi and Satoru's mom. Their struggle, ideals and stories made the show for me. I'll always find the Japanese products superior to Hollywood stuff anon. There are people that were unhappy about the ending? I was happy with how everything resolved EXCEPT for Airi seemingly disappearing from the show. I kept expecting her to show up, yet the ending credits came up and we still hadn't seen a single reference to her. I was kind of disappointed and ready to make a thread about how I wish they would have showed her. And then just as I was losing hope, she showed up.
People were bitching after last episode about how everything was worse off than it was for him, but he ended up not missing any years of his life (he still had the ones in the other timeline), getting a better life, more friends, catching a murderer, saving a bunch of people including his mother and being a better person overall.
Apparently the manga went into more detail with this, but I thought the show exceeded anyways.
If I had to nitpick the show despite my profound enjoyment of it, then it would still be way before these past two episodes. It still bothers me a little that Satoru concentrated on saving the victims he knew were gonna be killed without actually worrying about finding out who was doing it, especially considering he knew the murderer would go on far more murdering sprees even after those three were dead. The plan should have been to keep watch and catch the murderer on the act, rather than cornering him out. What if the murderer had just decided to murder a different girl that he would have never have murdered before? Also, how did Sato survive being drowned? If someone saved him, did they not see the car that looked just like the teacher's? Was there no investigation about how a kid died on a passenger seat of a car that had some kind of funky seatbelt and a rock on the pedal? It seems like everyone kind of just let it go for no reason, which was stupid.
Still, nitpicks aside, it was a great show, easily the best of this season. GG

When he sits next to Satoru it's clearly framed so it appears that he's slicing Satoru's throat open with a knife, but apparently changes his mind because he can't bring himself too.
And then his words on the rooftop indicate that if Satoru dies it leeches all the colour out of his murders (different to his manga persona from what I can establish.)
Furthermore, in the timeline as far as we know Satoru has thwarted all his attempts at murder and there's nothing that he needs to be concerned about. Because of his circumstances and the fact that he is timetravelling, he can't show his true self to anyone. He isn't unable to show his emotions, he fears the reactions and consequences of doing so.

Yeah, this is a major thematic point of the anime. Kayo hides her mother's abuse - both the effects and the emotional impact.
But Satoru's deceit runs much deeper than that, he's a time traveller and he fears being betrayed by his own body or whatever his own self was doing prior to his occupation. Kayo and Satoru are never able to truly connect because he never admits the truth (and he clearly wants to.) Same with Airi, she only sees the part of him that is running around away from the police, she never sees him in the past and he never admits that to her. Kenya, he tells another lie to. He wants to be the hero, but not for Kayo, but for his mother who he values above all else. Kenya doesn't know about the time travelling either although I suspect that he is an implied time traveller.
Even when the manga ends, Satoru is still a liar, albeit there's no reason for him to lie anymore because revival has left him.
But I don't think he'd be able to connect with anyone the way he connected with Yashiro, who knows that he travelled through time to thwart him. But even then, he only sees the surface of Satoru's true self that Satoru wants to show him - that of a saviour who understands him completely and can fill up that part of him which is empty (wants to be understanded).
But nobody understands Satoru. On the inside, he's exactly like Yashiro and will always be like him, the guy who's clinging to the hero without a face and who soaked up Yashiro's mannerisms like a sponge, wears the same clothes he did and wants to be a teacher.
This anime is an easy 10/10 for me.

The general rule of thumb is never do an amputation if you can avoid it. That's why people love drugs. In a healthy young adult it is generally better tolerated compared to a person who has diabetes for example (because they have bad circulation so their wound healing is worse and it often leads to the amputated parts falling apart).
