I don't want to get my hopes up (because manga and movies (and anime) are different), but if they're hoping to get more people reading the manga, baiting them with Taichi/Chihaya and then giving them something else would be a weird strategy.

I'm not so sure about that. IIRC, they cut some Arata scenes from the manga (minor scenes, but Arata is already lacking in screentime as it is), made Taichi's angsting even more pronounced, and introduced Taichi first, making it seem like he's The Guy, when Arata is introduced first in the manga.
