Not exactly. When Itami goes to the palace, it is to make him turn down the bounty on Lelei in the first place.
They tell him to back off, and threaten him with sniper shot. He gets scared, and eventually decide to move north, away from the Capital to get out the reach, but he is still very much in power.
Yes, they save both Pina and Emperor too, but it was more of a side quest at that moment.

It's a good thing nobody in the empire can into photography or propaganda or this would make a very damning picture to send to the Japanese media.
Is this original ending?
They changed the final episode completely from the novels. Most of the action scenes were changed or omitted.
Also changed Itami's motive for going to the palace, and made Pina more of a heroine than in the book.
Oh and I got the final book (gaiden+) LN edition on hand, will post some of the images I scanned.
How's the light novel? Does it fill the plot holes left and is the anime an original ending?

Oh yeah, also, Delilah x Yanagida and Vifeeta x Kengun stuff doesn't happen till well into book 4, so the anime showed them in advance.
Kinda bummed out, as instead of developing them into relationship they just crammed it into the final scenes.
If there's another season hopefully they'll still show it.
The manga will definitely do it faithfully though, so we can look forward to that.

Im not sure how the "original ending" panic started, but there are no real changes in the overall story.
True, the shipping spoilers and the last scene of him going (or trying to) to Comiket again is newly added to anime, but its probably just to end on lighter note as callback to first episode so he misses it yet again.
But it doesnt really change anything storywise, he simply took a few days off duty and then hes right back to Gate world and (hopefully) next season.

I thought the show would end with "GLORIOUS NIPPON STRONG FUCK EVERYONE WE DID NOTHING WRONG IN WWII" theme but instead, it ended in silly, comical way.
I'm not sure how strong the whole nationalistic attitude is in the original work but I certainly didn't feel such nuance in this 2 cour adaptation.

In the novel Itami takes a goblet from Tyuule's hands, puts it in the prince's hand, then have a sniper blast the goblet from beyond visible range, making the prince practically piss in his pants.
Which would have been way more tacticool to show in the anime.
It also ties into the later scene when Tyuule almost thought Itami was saving her (instead of taking the goblet) and nearly forget her vengeance as deep inside she actually wants to be saved

Meanwhile, Itami & co heads to Knuppnai, to answer a revelation by Goddess Hardy.
The fact a god is delivering divine message after unprecedented earthquakes and shifting of the stars in heaven was something too ominous for Japan to ignore, and sent Itami to investigate.
Pina tags along with Itami, wanting to learn the truth herself.
Itami questions her action as she's supposed to be appointed as the crown princess to take up after Malt, but she tells him she's sick and tired of politics and war, and doesn't want to be involved.
She then frowns and pout cutely and asks if Itami feels she's a nuisance.
She confess to Itami that when he came to save her from the capital, her heart was filled with joy. \
It was as if a hero appeared out of one of those storybooks from Risa. She almost regretted not being a man so she can ship herself with him.
However when she learned that his visit to the capital was not to save her, and him picking her up was just merely incidental her dreams were crushed.
She demands apology for hurting her feelings, and Itami tries to escape the conversation.

Isn't Itami supposed to threaten Asshole Prince with a sniper, grabbing a cup from Tyuule to give to him only to have him see it shot out of his hands to show him that the JSDF can have him killed at any time if he starts shit?
Tyuule thinks that Itami approaching her for the cup is him going to free her like Pina and Noriko, but nope, it's just him wanting the cup.
