I think tournament arc can be good if they
a) incorporate already established characters instead of just throwing a bunch of newcomers into the mix
b) have interesting match-ups ex. two allied party-members or people with skillsets that clash in weird ways
c) involve motivations for the different combatants that has as much weight as the mc with different storylines clashing during the arc

and most importantly
d) have the distinct possibility of someone other than mc winning. If it's the end of the world if the hero loses, then there's no drama or excitement

What's your thoughts?
