The anime is an alternate universe where Stitch crash-lands in Japan instead of Hawaii. Lilo is never mentioned in the original except for one of the last episodes but only because Disney ask Japan to animate an episode that fits in with the dub continuity

I'd want an adaptation from something with a potentially interesting premise but shitty execution.
