Why do so many animu have fictional settings instead of real Japanese cities?

One reason is that they were going for a generic town and just really wanted to just be representative of the general idea of a Japanese city instead (or didn't want to hear complaints that they had gotten it all wrong from actual people living from an actual city)
A lot of comics and animation in general does this, even in the west, think of Springfield and The Simpsons for example
