I haven't seen one of these in a while.
What have you been watching?
Have some BD's been subbed or released recently?
Just watched Ikusa 1 and it was weird. Remember some anon saying it was about space lesbians. Wish it would have been more about that though.
>>138992955
I just watched 3x3 Eyes and it was pretty good. There's also a sequel that came out 5 years later which is even better.
I haven't remembered to really watch oldies in ages. Planning to watch Doubutsu Takarajima when I next have time. Bump though.
>>138992955
Why does anime look a lot blurrier and washed out?
>>138993922
old I mean
I wonder if Ganba will ever be fully released it's one of the few Dezaki shows that I haven't seen.
Is Magic Knight Rayearth good? Too bad that the BD rips looks like shit.
Obari it up
>>138994076
>Is Magic Knight Rayearth good?
Yes. It is clamp
I'm finishing Zeta Gundam I' really disappointed. It has the 0079 flaws but with a lot more retarded and/or unlikeable characters. Why do people love it ? Even the war themes are poorly executed.
>>138994235
>It has the 0079 flaws but with a lot more retarded and/or unlikeable characters
They're lovably hideous human beings. Except for based Jerid.
>>138994235
I only ever watched the original, which I feel like was one of those so bad it's good things, and war in pocket which was great.
>>138993922
Animation was hard back then. Smooth or high quality: Pick one.
>>138994273
I never saw human beings behaving like that. I almost feel bad for Jerid though.
>>138994076
>Is Magic Knight Rayearth good?
it has the best OP of all time
Windaria was fucking good. I need to see his other works. Downloaded birth and will check it out later.
Are Roujin Z and Venus Wars good movies?
>>138995304
Why do you ask instead of just watching them?
>>138995304
Roujin is neat. Watch it first.
Waiting for the BD rips of Megazone 23, Tekkaman Blade, Tobikage, Zillion and beyond the episode 11 of Yawara.
>>138992955
I saw a couple BD eps of Rayearth released subbed
>>138993922
DVDs are shit, low res
>>138994356
Not really. Lots of old things are only available in low res DVDs or bad encodes, so you get the impression of bad quality. And outside of long running TV anime animation was usually well done.
Iczer has finally got a BD release, so it might be watchable in good quality soon.
>>138995465
I know the first 2 are but who knows how long til they are all released.
>Iczer has finally got a BD
Didn't know that should have got those instead of watching the DVD, but there aren't even rips on nyaa.
>Space Cobra Movie
The TV show is one of my absolute favorites but the movie I thought was pretty bad.
Started watching Ideon, finished the 4th episode yesterday.
It's not confirmed yet but it's pretty fucking obvious that the Ideon and the Spaceship only work when that baby with white hair is crying.
The way they start their little war is really fucking stupid.
>hey look, there are aliens on this planet
>let's check it out
>oh shit they have buildings and an artifact, ATTACK
Also, I don't really get which faction came from Earth and which one didn't. Maybe both did, it's really confusing.
>>138995638
I liked it. TV does a better job with a lot of things, but the movie still has the Dezaki touch and CRYSTAL BOY, even if the plot is standard 70's/80s camp.
.
>>138995304
>Roujin Z
Yes it's good.
>>138995763
I can't stand early Tomino stuff. I envy those who can, because overall it's usually interesting, just feels horribly cobbled together.
>>138995908
How she got away with attempted murder twice is beyond me.
>>138995763
You've deducted wrong.
The MCs come from planet Solo that's an Earthling colony. Buff Clan are a mystery. Earth is just mankind's cradle in it.
>>138996160
Ok, that makes kind of sense I guess.
It's just handled really weirdly, at least in the first few episodes.
>>138996105
The power of money.
Waiting on [EG] Victory Gundam BD - Disc 5.
>>138994273
Paptimus,Jerid and Yazan were the only good characters.
>>138996615
Holy shit.
>>138995933
Didn't like the different voice of Cobra, the guy doing him in the Tv series is perfect. But I suppose since the movie was first that couldn't be helped.
>>138996555
That girl was indeed fucking crazy. I wonder if the MC and Rei would have ended up together if she hadn'tdiedOr was that just some Class S stuff?
>>138996324
There are bluray rips (with improved subs) for the first 30 or so episodes already you know. The rest are coming eventually.
I'm the past week I've finished ZZ Gundam, F91, War in the pocket, SDF macross, and the movie. Now I'm in that weird spot where need to finally decided something else to watch. I'm thinking Macross +, 0083, and the Slayers series.
>>138993922
1) DVD rips are shit
2) LD and VHS rips are even worse
2) A lot of shows were made mainly on 16mm film because it was cheaper, the ones with better budgets were on 35mm film which usually looks clearer when they make a BD transfer for it. Sometimes shows used 35mm for the OP/ED and frequently used stock footage, then the rest would be in 16mm.
>>138997979
0083 is good from what I've seen so far
>>138997979
>0083
Always saw that one webm with some guy looking angry in 1080p and look the BD is actually fully released.
Working through Patlabor, starting with the tv series. A lot more SoL then I was expecting.
>>138999150
Much more SoL in the series compared to the movies.Noa a best
>>138998103
>A lot of shows were made mainly on 16mm film because it was cheaper,
I never knew that.
I remember an anon saying one could watch the second Patlabor movie wihtout having watched anything else because the main cast isn't really in it.
Since I don't watch movies alone I'd watch it with a friend but he hasn't seen anything patlabor.
>>138999756
You can even run into some occasional 8mm stuff. Watch enough old blurays and you can eventually pick up the distinction by eye.
Most of /a/ watches new stuff. The threads like this for older stuff will never reach bump limit ever again.
>>139001461
Sometimes they managed to.
>>139001461
Reaching the bump limit is not really a good thing.
>>139001496
I have tried to make threads for older stuff and they get like 12 replies before dying. I just don't know anymore.
I started watching "Iria Zeiram the Animation" a while back. It's not something I'm able to watch more than one episode at a time, and not that interesting either, so only watched three episodes so far, but it's okay and still pretty good.
Also finally started Rose of Versailles, but on a break after 10 episodes. About French royalty, taking place in the late 1700s? I fear how this will end.
But so far, it has been absolutely amazing, I love it. Just don't want to watch the ending I'm expecting to happen.
>>138994076
Rayearth is awesome! Please watch it, it needs more fans. And the first OP is amazing. The background music is great too, and I love the main characters. Please watch!
I really want to cosplay it, already bought some stuff but need to start working on it...
>>139001461
When there's a high profile BD release there's sometimes a chance.
>>139001907
>Rose of Versailles
You're in for the greatest anime of all time, at least for me.
I'm watching zz Gundam, damn this series is a fucking mess.I'm at episode 18 and nothing has happend so far besides some fag with a rose chasing a babysitter called Bright Noa.
I finished LOGH last year and wanted to watch more adaptations of the same author. Arslan Senki's OVA are great but the story is incomplete and only six episodes. Nana Toshi Monogatari was just a two episode ad for the books, and was hodepodged and rushed.
I'm coming to realize most OVA's made in the 90's are essentially just vehicles to sell the manga.
>>138997114
Picking a popular singer to voice Cobra in the movie probably wasn't the best of ideas.
>>139002306
>I'm coming to realize most OVA's made in the 90's are essentially just vehicles to sell the manga.
Congratulations, you're overcoming nostalgiafaggotry.
>>139002306
The best things about 90s OVAs is just the atmosphere. I don't think you'd buy them wanting a complete story with some exceptions.
>>139002462
I'm okay with that, I think. I enjoy the colors and style of early-mid 90's anime. There's plenty of stories (Nadia, Escaflowne, Rayearth, etc) that I can watch if I want a good story. I really enjoy OVA's anyways even if they're clear attempts at selling manga.
Really should rewatchbothRurouni Kenshin OVA's, they're just too good.
>>138999756
With how cheap anime usually is, I think more stuff was actually 16mm than not. OVAs were often 35mm the whole way through, but TV had a ton of 16mm.
>>139002109
Love ZZ.
>>139001554
I certainly hope you don't mean for specific series, since that's always been an issue.

It's by Dezaki though so there aren't really any similarities.
I finally watched Sanctuary yesterday. It's nothing special, but not bad either, quite a decent OVA.
Is the manga worth it?
>>139003151
He's referencing the fact that Ikuhara was heavily inspired by RoV when he was involved in the creation of Utena
Why was kite so fucked up. Goddamn.
>>138994235
Zeta Gundam is meh.
Tomino doesn't understand people or human relationships at all and can't write dialogue to save his life.
The plot is also as formulaic as any show from the 60s or 70s.
The standouts of the series are the music and the visual design.
>>139003151
I thought she was wearing glasses from the thumbnail
>>139005173
You say that as if though formulaic series from those decades weren't good.
Nothing but special but finally watching Yu Yu Hakusho. Enjoying it a lot so far.
Watched Violence Jack 2 yesterday.
Unironically owned. The first was utter shit but this was great.

>>138994076
I have a translation for episode 3 at least, but no guarantees for the rest.

Waiting for Warau Salesman, Gamba and WBS, but at this rate I might end up watching them raw.
Also pisses me off how few DVD/BD releases of old anime get ripped. The prices are just too high.
>>139005450
How is it to the manga?
>>139006219
Eh, it'll happen eventually. It took years for anyone to rip Ideon.
>>139005660

Who buys a new box set in the first place just to rip it and put it online? Going by your logic no one would ever upload anything they paid money for.

What stuff happens? Are there people trying to stop her? And then we just see her awesome escape scene? But then the city is destroyed and there are petals everywhere and a laser causes trees to grow. What is going on!
So when the city is destroyed and flowers everywhere, it seems the world is covered with green and vegetation. Also, it's the same spaceship that fires the laser that gives her the bunny powers? Is she a nature extremist, trying to destroy humanity to save the earth, and the enemies try to stop her, but in the end, we see her win when she's able to fire the laser, where the spaceship is shaped like a vegetable, representing the natural and her values. The destruction of the city followed by the flowers and vegetation growth represents how the destruction of civilization will bring back nature to how it was meant to be.
Okay, this are just some wild guesses. Am I on to something?

>>138994076
Did you watch the ugly filtered one pictured? The 2.7gig some anon uploaded recently looks fine.
>>139005531
Long motw series with a competent staff are always my favorite thing to watch. Enough time to really flesh out a full cast, build the setting, and experiment, rather than the rushed mess modern seasonal anime is (similar to old ovas if anything, without the style and atmosphere). And the payoff of a good ending is always worth it.
>>139001554

>>139007345
If he did, then people really outta stop comparing encodes like they're the actual BD. A lot of encoders put filters on 'em and the majority probably take that as the real thing.
City Hunter is not only an advocate for concealed carry permits but also has fantastic trigger discipline

You didn't like the Cooter Wolves? Have you tried Megazone 23, Cyber City Oedo 808, or Legend of the Blue Wolves?
>>139008209
This board should be be split into currently airing / older anime boards. It'd be a lot slower obviously, but it's not like that's a problem. Threads on obscure shows would hang around a lot longer and let people find them before they get bumped off. Although it might just devolve into generals /int/style.
>>139008689
If you want to see why that's a terrible idea, look at /vr/.
Help /a/ I'm all out of 90's/80's shit to watch after I finish City Hunter and maby rewatch Wicked City/Bio Hunter/Dirty Pair TV
>>139008689
Nothing good comes from dividing boards.
>Threads on obscure shows would hang around a lot longer
Maybe, but I don't think a board for non-currently airing stuff would insensitive people to talk about older stuff.
>>139008742
Solution. Mecha.
>>139008723
/vr/ is fine. We need a retro anime and manga board, too. Current /a/ is a mess of new shows and manga while older series get shunned. That, and how quickly new threads are made kills them.
>>139008742
Votoms or Cobra maybe? You could hit up some classic ovas like angel's egg, memories, gits, or giant robo.
>>139009105
>/vr/ is fine.
It's just as bad as /v/ yet somehow made that shithole even worse by its creation. Separating a board in to old and new just breeds the most obnoxious kind of elitists on a dead board on one end, and removes legitimately good content from the other.
>>139008742
See
>>138995203

>>139008742
You're Under Arrest? That's what I'm watchig currently. (watch the OVA's first, then the TV series)
>nearly all fantasy OVAs are extremely short or incomplete adaptations
Any decent lengthed fantasy OVAs? I can think of Lodoss, Ellcia, and I guess Bastard!! which I haven't watched.
>>139009105
>>139009214
Honestly, you both bring up good points. To be honest though, I don't think the creation of a new board and vice versa really matters.
The people using them are going to be antagonistic shitheads no matter where they are.
>>139009214
Please, actually post and lurk there before judging /vr/. They always have a neato retro Japanese games thread and it's extremely not as autistic as /v/ which is great. A retro anime and manga board would be like having a version of /a/ without the /a/utism.
Orphen was such a letdown, I was expecting a decent DnD-style adventure series and I got no adventures, a boring plot, and a case where everybody but Orphen is a useless load.
On the plus side, Lodoss War TV is a lot better than I expected.
As it turns out DnD style fantasy is all I ever really wanted in my life and I think I'm running dry on them.
>>139009514
>You're Under Arrest?
Oh god that show was meh as hell. If they took out the bullshit with captain falcons 75 year old dad banging a 20 year old girl it would have been better. God what the fuck was that so many episodes wasted.

So far there have only been 2 episodes focusing on "Cap. Falcon's" parents. I'm about halfway through the series, and I'm enjoying it. I agree it's not the best, but I'm having fun so that's a plus.
>>139007762
>majority of threads ventured around new releases
While the anime industry grow a lot(we get a ridiculously big number of shows a year if compared to old times), the mecha genre declined and is far from being relevant right now. Mecha don't sell anymore except if it's main-line Gundam.
If you like mecha you have no choice but to watch old shows. That's not the case if you enjoy anime in general, of course newer shows are going to monopolize all the discussion, you have something to move on. Lodoss got really nice threads when the BD was released but you can't expect people to come back to old shows, which are discussed a long time ago, unless there is something new to talk about.
Gonna get around to watching the Irresponsible Captain Tylor movies and OVAs soon.
>>139009518
Because many of them were made not to be stand-alone works, but to be advertisements for the then-running light novels or manga.
I love the designs for Weathering Continent(same character designer as Lodoss), but it's just a short movie to advertise books.
Books that I don't think were ever translated into English.
Not that we're the target audience.
>>139009761
I think later there is the marriage that takes up a few more episodes. S2 is ass and it ended with S1.
>>139009791
The OVAs were a dip in quality from the TV series.
Still, it had some nice episodes. Ensign Kojiro had a nice one, as did the Marines.
>>138992955
I started Fist of the North Star last year. Finished the anime in January and now I'm finishing the manga. Favorite ost from the show:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoDn_scXqvQ
The series as a whole is fucking fantastic. It's basically the grandaddy of modern shonen, and I get a better picture of how stuff came after it was inspired. In particular, Bobobo is a lot funnier to me know.
What I don't like is Ken's overall lack of facial expressions, and the fact that none of my anime nerd friends have even heard of the series.
>it's a Strike Man episode

>>139009995

The masters are lost or destroyed I'm pretty sure
>>139011025
Sadly seems to be the case. Even the DVDs are pretty shitty quality.
>>139010854
From what I can tell, it's pretty much the same for most Japanese television.
>>139011147
Yep. In America, most of us are used to paying around 20 bucks for a movie. That was the cost on VHS, on DVD and now BD after it saw a spike to an average of 30 for a little while.
Japs are used to paying the equivalent to 50 bucks for their movies and so, a single BD with two episodes on it for 50 bucks is just normal for them because that's how it was when anime was on VHS and LaserDisc.
>>139011259
I forget where I heard this, but I did hear that it became that way largely because of the rental market. Japanese customers would have rather rented and copied the tapes instead of buying them outright.
Not pre-2000, but I just started Noir because it's probably one of the last analog TV anime made, so the BD isn't too bad.
>>139011667
This basically, they started buying copies intended for video rental stores directly from the source, so they would get to keep them. The studios were more than happy to sell them the videos at those prices.
Seiya.
I love it, but sometimes these characters get ridiculous. I can't even count the number of times Shiryuu died or almost died.
>>139010589
Episode three is basically a dry-run for a lot of what Kawajiri wanted to do in Bloodlust. Design elements are brought back, and you could almost see them existing in the same universe.
>>139011098
>>139011025
I'm sure the film elements are fine. The movies and OVAs just all got some BD releases, didn't they? Though, the first TV series is seriously cheap, so a BD can only do so much to bring out the image that's there.
From episode 75 IIRC

Noir looks pretty good, but man is it boring. I dropped it after 11 episodes of nothing interesting happening.
>>139012810
Yeah, the same is true of all of Bee Train's "Girls-with-guns" trilogy involving Noir, Madlax and El Cazador de la Bruja.

>80g
I got the 720p version and think it looks fine enough.
>>139013460
Well you're wrong!
>>138993922
I think I can help a little more than other people saying "It just is" televisions were worse, 360p was high quality for a television and 720p was good enough for the production cut that they copy from by the company. A lot of things factored into it, the camera lens used to take pictures and so. Things had to be made quickly so it was sketched, inked, then colored with copic, and then pictures were taken. They were almost always low production budgets so people were working mostly out of hope and hobby.

For Dirty Pair and Cobra, do I just start with the original TV series and then do whatever I want from there? Also, out of curiosity, has anybody here heard of Boldor: The Invisible Neighbour?
>>139014898
Yeah, especially for Cobra because it's one-shots or 3-4 episode long arcs, honestly you don't even need to watch the original series to understand what's happening.
Rewatching this, finished the canon stuff but continuing because I'm incapable of dropping anything. The motivations and actions of some of these filler characters are so retarded it's infuriating

No shame in liking Saint Seiya. Although the movies are more ridiculous for me. Shun can't even move without tripping over himself and Ikki comes in and saves the day every time, Seiya always gets the Sagittarius cloth, etc.

>Why does anime look a lot blurrier and washed out?
>DVDs are shit, low res
No, it was shot on 16mm film. Has nothing to do with DVD or resolution.
The original transfer was all analog video until it got to the digital master with the previous generation of making things. A new transfer using latest film scanning would look a lot better on DVD, hell even digitally mastered VHS. It's all in what you have and how it's used.

Oniisama E is great thou, top Dezaki shelf tbhfam. I have to admit I cried whenRei bought the farmHaving read both the manga and watched the show, I honestly don't knwo if I prefere it beingsuicide or accidental deathThe first is maybe sadder, but the second has the Aerith death sudden feeling to it, you really feel Nanako got robbed of her Good End by a mischievous fairy, like the ED says.
Seeing a lot of Dezaki love in this thread which is great since I've been meaning to get into his work for a while. I'm thinking of watching Versailles soon, but just for fun I'd like to ask
Which series do you think is the best starting point?
Which is your favorite?
Which do you think is the most influential?

The manga is a bloodbath compared to the animeIt's also the ending to more than one Go Nagai series
Taking a break from my Tenchi Muyo binge and just finished watching the Record of Lodoss War OVA. Now I'm in the middle of watching Gundam Wing which I'm enjoying a lot more than people have told me I would. I can't tell if I like it just because of the character and mech designs or the plot just has me confused enough to make me want to see how it ends.

I'd recommend watching the movie first and then the OVA's for more delicious animation.
My reasoning being that the movie takes out a lot of content early on (which is bad) but adds in a very important scene near the end that wasn't in the OVA for some strange reason.
I think all the Macross series are now on BD, which is nice.

Been watching zeta.
Renewed my displeasure about tomino dialog, characters skipping developmental stages (unnoticed timeskips?) in relationships and the way they interact. Given that it's 50 episodes there was more time to work on this, but the episodly mech fight needed to happen inter-spaced by fragmented dialog.
Still hilarious to see the designated bad guys act like complete retards. Recently watched e26 where a titan pilot baits kamille into killing his commanding officer (the baboon) and his ship. This guy is char levels of 'fuck my own team, and no retribution for this at all', he's yet another traitor/spy.
Somehow Bright can't accept newtypes as existing? His fucking wife had/has low level telepathy with amuro, how the fuck are they still denying it? Four wrecked a large portion of HK, why the fuck doesn't HK go full AUEG support since feddies (titan faction) are just another zeon wrecking civvies.
Then there's the lack of surveillance tech during many of the trips to cities, hand wave it as 80's thing? It's not like surveillance tech was new then, why so little of it in the series.
For a horrors of war series not enough research went into all the spy/surveillance games that there should be.
>>139005784

BEST PHYSICS
>>139020749
The worst offender on retardation I find is if two mobile suits are fighting eachother and one of them escapes into say a colony or space station, the pilot leaves the mobile suit and goes in with their own body but when the opposing mobile suit finds the enemy mobile suit they don't immediately shoot it (even if it's empty), they sometimes just get out of their mobile suit and follow them in.
Makes no sense.
>>139020749
Zeta is a clusterfuck that somehow manages to be more than the sum of its parts, if that makes any sense.
Still, to this day I don't understand the reappraisal the series underwent about a decade ago.
>>139005531
But some of the episodly fights in Z are shit.
>chasey chase
>oh noes they are chasing
>4 suits rush to attack
>4 suits rush to defend
>mook/ 'character we're meant to feel sorry for' dies
>repeat next episode until scenery changes or actual battle takes place
The above structure for how the weekly fight happens isn't exact but you get the idea that there's always a reason for a weekly mech fight (sometimes with new toy to sell).
The character we're meant to feel sorry for is badly done, they often come off full retard. As either honor, revenge etc (insert emotional motivator) drives them to basically suicide against the superior force and their commander is like 'sure go ahead', but demonstrates they know they just sent them on a suicide run for no fucking gain.
Nice to see my thread is still there, wasn't expecting that.

>Why? You're not allowed to have fun talking about a show if it's not good?
You're missing the point.
>>139022596

I just prefer the company of people who enjoy talking about things they like in nerdy detail rather than people just watching whatever's popular because they're lonely. Like this thread is a lot of recommendations, opinions and reviews of shows, and somewhat educated discussion about the history of things (filming techniques, directors, etc). It's a lot more interesting than just a bunch of reactions in caps when an episode airs following by a week of threads complaining how awful everything is and insulting each other.

What I'm saying is that I don't think someone watching a certain show for the threads means they only watch popular shit and/or only watch anime to fit in. It's like if someone said they had fun watching a bad movie with their friends and you decided they were a poser who didn't really like movies.

Yeah, but that's because they all saw it first on BD and not before which shows how new they really are and what this board is like. To them, it was technically a new release. So they're obviously not going to talk about old anime here unless it has a BD.

It's not. And 999 doesn't really have filler, the entire series is about the journey and visiting the different destinations.
The movie will also spoil the ending.
Another thing is that the 999 movies place a far bit of heft on the likes of Captain Harlock rather than being their own thing, so you kinda need to watch some Space Pirate to really get what Harlock is all about since he's prominent in the movies.

Damn, I had a vague recollection of seeing a clip of two women repeatedly slapping each other and I thought it was from Gundam Wing. I was hugely disappointed when I watched Wing and didn't see it anywhere, not to mention how shitty the show is. Now I'm glad that I finally know where it's from.
>>139025954
Sameface is who he is. Check out the new Yamato, of course. It's not his designs at all, but it really improves upon what the 70s show could do.
I'd recommend the Queen Millennia movie because it's kind of weird but still pretty good, if confusing and jumpy. The show is slowly being subbed by Live-eviL, but so far it's much weaker than Harlock. And speaking of Harlock, watch all of it except maybe the 6 part Ring Cycle OVA from the 90s, and Gun Frontier, and Cosmo Warrior Zero. Those you can skip unless you feel this compulsive need to watch more Leijiverse stuff. But the 78 series, the Arcadia of My Youth film, and the Endless Odyssey OVA from the early 00s, are all fantastic. Endless Orbit SSX may be okay, but it's almost more kiddie friendly despite being in the 80s when stuff is supposed to be getting more violent.
>>139028704
I kind of like that pic for a different reason: quickly shows the contrast between 16 and 35mm and what you can reasonably expect in terms of grain and detail. 16mm kind of tops out around 1080p for resolving any more detail, but 35mm is still suitable for 4K so BD really isn't the end of the line for some anime, they can be remastered again, and better. Some anime really fucking need it, like Tenchi Muyo and Bubblegum Crisis.

Saying Macross was ahead of its time is an understatement. Kawajiri and Ishiguro were tapping into themes and trends that wouldn't really become a thing until so much later, and at least for Ishiguro, he did it again with Megazone 23. Macross is basically the start of 80s anime, which is later reinforced by DYRL.

I only read his redraw of New Treasure Island with the twist ending uncensored and it was cool and all the shit taken from American cartoons actually made sense thematically that way instead of feeling like just what every other kids' comic in Japan was doing back then
I downloaded Lost World but the notes at the end about how he had to make some dumb changes to make it "child friendly" made me a bit wary of reading it since the changes are really dumb (love interest changed to "like a sister to me" BUT THEN THEY TALK ABOUT THEIR DESCENDANTS WHAT THE HELL)
Next World I know nothing about and Madokami is down
I kinda wish he didn't redraw New Treasure Island because the old one from what I saw had some really interesting art and pretty impressive given his age and the standards of the time (everyone was copying American cartoons and comics stylistically but he actually did it well and genuinely loved the stuff)
I understand why he disowned and redrew his teenage work though, 40s printing methods sure did a number on his inking and sometimes outright misunderstood his drawings.

I know, I miss them. You think they'd atleast make a new thread for ever Bakuon Rettou release, same for the other yankii series they're scanlating. It was really fun reading along in the threads.I miss them.
>>139041262
>is it worth watching the last two Black Jack OVA
Might as well watch them so it's complete but, like you said, they are indeed shit. Don't even compare to the awesome Dezaki ones.
>>139041269
Shame you don't seem him much anymore. At least you can apparently commission porn from him, though.
>>139040131
Tons of old shows were "normal teenager gets transported to another world". Straight fantasy stuff was pretty rare even in the 90s.
I don't really think the concept is too abhorrent, modern shows just feel too dead and soulless for me to watch.
>>139041922
Reminder that he drew an official H manga for Godannar.
God bless.
>>139042228
Only part of it, and it was only one or two pages.
>>139042104
Ah yes, the classic self insert MC sent to another world fantasy. The tragic ones always get me.
>>138993326
>>139039019
read the manga you fucks
>>139042355
I thought he drew the whole thing.
>>138996615
>>139038636
Fucking victory gundam.
>>139042104
Yeah, it's almost the norm to have that. Leda did it in 85, Wataru did it in 88, and of course Escaflowne in 96.
>>139042488
Nope. It's very easy to tell when you get a look at the thing. It has more done by various other members of the staff.
>>139042569
Still very cool.
>>139042916
A series partially funded by an official doujin is pretty cool, yeah. One of them is on sadpanda if you feel like checking it out.
>>139040329
Those themes you're talking about are really old, though, even for its time. Maybe not in anime, but definitely in science fiction.
>>139043023
Make sure to check out his work from Sogna
Since people seem more mixed about Venus Wars is there anything elso good to watch preferably in BD. I'm gonna watch Roujin Z but I need something else.
I'm always watching movies with a friend and we watched stuff like Night on the Galactic Railraod, Space Cobra movie, both Vampire Hunter, Golgo and Black Jack movie.
>>139043278
Venis Wars is worth Watching once.
>>139043278
Venus Wars isn't too bright, but it's full of good designs and action. It's just a movie so it's not like you're really wasting that much time.
>>139043278
I understand why some people dislike the 2nd half.
However I watched it with that in mind, and I enjoyed it from start to finish. You better watch that shit.
>>139039431
Woah Next World looks cool as shit, definitely gotta read it. Is it one of those redrawn releases though? All the art looks too polished for 1951 Tezuka.
Also one of those "Rock as a hero" stories. Gonna be a little weird after being introduced to him through Rintaro's Metropolis and Alabaster.
>>139043278
I just assume everything youtube loser bennett the sage says is bad is worth a watch
>>139042541
I love it.
>>139039576
Holy shit, I didn't know that was a "so bad it's good" series.
I was planning on watching it because an anon told me that one of the Ideon movies is a masterpiece better than almost all other anime films.
Maybe I was lied to....
>>139029489
Keep going, you haven't even seen best girl yet
>>139043278
Venus Wars isn't bad, and you can definitely do worse. It's worth a watch, and it's not like it's a tv series or long OVA, so it won't take up that much of your time.
It's just not as good as Roujin Z.
>>139043804
Tomino is just a weird fucking director. His style is always so manic and fast-paced that half of the shit going on feels like there's no connection, and then no resolution.
>>139043957
The thing with Roujin-Z is how important the central problem of the plot has only become more relevant.
Finishing up Gall Force. I don't think I've encountered something that I fit so snugly into the demographic for in a while.
Nearing the end of Cardcaptor Sakura. Beautiful show. Glad /a/ got me to watch it.
holy shit the character art in Next World is so fucking lively. Like even by Tezuka standards this is something special.
These scans piss me off though and make me want to just buy the two books used.
Just finished Second Stage, loving so far. Does it get better ?
>>139044582
The way the characters act while talking is fucking gorgeous, I don't care if it slows down the pace
>>139044628
No, I can't fucking read it this way. I NEED to buy this.
>>139044379
I really need to rewatch the movie trilogy, but these days I just don't bother with rewatches unless a BD is coming out. Definitely excited to see Iczer-1 and Dangaioh again; still waiting on Megazone 23.
>>139044398
I really wanted to get into it since I never watched it as a kid but the second that chinese bitchboy showed up I dropped it.
>>139039576
>Ideon
>"So bad it's good"
Get some fucking taste
>>139043214
I already have. Many, many times, in fact.
>>139044628
>>139044681
I own the first volume but I need to get the second. Thankfully, it's really inexpensive.
>>139045063
You got the full collection of Sogna?
>>138992955
I just finished Dirty Pair this week and enjoyed it a lot, loved the art style for the TV series but my one complaint was about how it didn't really have much of a plot to begin with but the humour stopped it from being boring.
I'm rewatching Gunbuster right now since I haven't seen the BD version yet and it is magnificent, also watching the Votom's OVAs on the side. Finished The Last Red Shoulder last night and I'm going to start Big Battle once I'm finished with Gunbuster.
Working my way through 999 too and not trying to rush it, I'm 30-40 episodes towards the end.
I'm enjoying this so far for the novelty of the premise alone. I'm 10 episodes in, and expecting shit get crazy because of Tomino. Should I bother?
>>139045127
Yeah I just checked Amazon, I can actually afford this especially used. I don't even care if the covers are fucked or whatever, anything is better than these scans.
>>139045381
I really wanted to like Dunbine, and watched it all the way through. You should drop it and move on to something better.
>>139045482
I'd still try to spring for a new copy if I were you though. But mainly because even new copies are pretty reasonable.
>>139044743
Shaoran is a good kid who was raised with an enormous amount of pressure on him to become the next great magician while also training in kung-fu. Over time he undergoes significant character development and mellows outand falls in love with Sakura. As a character he's a lot more than his first impression.
Unless you just hate Chinese people. Then there's no helping it.
>>139046016
The problem would be more that I do't like tsundere and male tsundere is even worse.
>>139045381
Pretty much this >>139045548
It pains me to shit on old classics, but past the novelty I thought it was pretty bad.
It has a small fanbase though.
Gunsmith cats, one of my favs from the 90s
>>139046401
I assume you've seen Riding Bean.
What is the comfiest show of pre-2000 anime?
>>139046563
Yeah its good but the Rally from GSC is my girl.
>>139047323
Patlabor.
>>139047455
Been a while since I watched it Patlabor but I remember there was this one episode I didn't understand at all.
It was where the male MC, forgot the name, went through time or to a different timeline or something like that. What was the point of that?
>>139047323
The correct answer is Gosenzosama banbanzai
>>139047323
Black Jack.
>>139025595
Whats this from?
>>139039862
>Hating Gundam Wing.
Top pleb.
>>139040900
Completely disagree, Kei's redesign is fucking awful.
I watched Gunbuster last week. It was great and I loved it.
>>139048813
Sherlock Hound.
>>139001907
>I fear how this will end
Prepare to be an emotional wreck come the end of the series.
>>139047323
Kabocha Wine, so far. It's about a thick oneesan who wants to /ss/ with a tsundere wannabe toughguy.
Does anyone have external subs for Galaxy Express 999 beyond episode 43? The Toei rip that is currently available sucks hard, it's almost blasphemous to watch such a classic in potato quality.
>>139041262
>We used to have these threads at least once a week.
Someone started doing them back-to-back and then they kind of died.
>>139041320
what is this
>>139051475
>it's almost blasphemous to watch such a classic in potato quality
That's just how it was originally watched. You think everyone even had color TV then?
>>139051671
People that had b&w TV sets were most likely a minority nearing the end of the 70s. If it's available in a better quality why not watch it, especially since the DVD/BD conversion of older anime looks magnificent.
>>139032955
Fuck you, too.
>>139034603
It has to be that size to retain grain and quality. Even Eva BD encodes were around that size.
>>139038238
Eww.
>>139044398
Probably because of all the pedo threads about it, right?
>>139051671
How we can see some anime on old BD now isn't even how the people sitting at desks inking the cels saw it, because they had no grain. I don't care how the audience saw it, that's a limitation introduced through the process of broadcasting.
>>139052247
>Even Eva BD encodes were around that size.
No, anon, only a couple eps RX acknowledged that he fucked up were that size. Most were 2 or under
>>139052247
>Probably because of all the pedo threads about it, right?
I am not sexually attracted to Sakura. I just saw a lot of CCS threads with really passionate Anons lavishing praise on it. The series clearly means a lot to some people, and I wanted to see why. And now I can.
>>139046563
>>139047423
Don't forget! Riding Bean BD Kickstarter is still going. We do good here, we may get Gunsmith Cats OVA next.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/madoverlord/riding-bean-high-octane-edition-anime-blu-ray
>>139052629
I doubt >>139052247 needs that much bitrate, but eva is bitstarved and eg degrained it even further, so obviously it's not gonna take as much space. if you actually care to conserve enough detail such that it is virtually the same as the source, then 1080p grainy content will easily reach that level.
>>139055015
The BDs were bitstarved or the encode was?
>>139055254
I meant the discs, but it was probably denoised beforehand as well.
>>139055436
So what do you want, like 3 eps a BD with each ep being like 16 gigs?
>>139055529
If that would stop them from wiping grain, sure.
>>139032955
>>139052247
To be sure, in the early episodes of Rayearth the characters can look kinda derpy. They get much prettier in the later episodes.
>>139055723
Would you download 26 16gig files and store them on a hdd? Because I sure wouldn't.
>>139020076
What is confusing about the plot of Wing?
>>139040197
Sweet. Robotech was my first annie-may (aside from the Pilaf Saga that came on some local channel every Saturday in 93 or somesuch).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF0UJTmNuaY I'll never forget this song.
>>139045148
Whatever you can find on sadpanda and nyaa, yeah.
>>139046401
Excellent taste.
>most of the anime I enjoy the most are older series that will probably never be revived or looked at again.
Tell me /a/ Has anime changed? Have standards changed? Or am I just a nostalgiafag?
My pointless moping aside, is Rose of Versailles any good? Which is better, the anime or the manga?
I like pretty dresses, but I'm told it's a great series as well. I just don't know which version to start though.
>>139050450
Now watch Aim for the Ace!
>>139053730
>Those cels
If only I had a few hundred bucks to burn.
>>139058011
>Has anime changed? Have standards changed?
You could ask that about anything, and the answer would be yes. Time tends to do that.
>Or am I just a nostalgiafag?
Yes, since we all are to some extent.

>>139047323
Early 90's shoujo in general feels really comfy to me. Don't know why, it just does.
>>139060122
Pretty much agreed on this. It's all so damn comfy.
