Have some BD's been subbed or released recently?
Just watched Ikusa 1 and it was weird. Remember some anon saying it was about space lesbians. Wish it would have been more about that though.

I'm finishing Zeta Gundam I' really disappointed. It has the 0079 flaws but with a lot more retarded and/or unlikeable characters. Why do people love it ? Even the war themes are poorly executed.

Not really. Lots of old things are only available in low res DVDs or bad encodes, so you get the impression of bad quality. And outside of long running TV anime animation was usually well done.
Iczer has finally got a BD release, so it might be watchable in good quality soon.

The TV show is one of my absolute favorites but the movie I thought was pretty bad.
Started watching Ideon, finished the 4th episode yesterday.
It's not confirmed yet but it's pretty fucking obvious that the Ideon and the Spaceship only work when that baby with white hair is crying.
The way they start their little war is really fucking stupid.

There are bluray rips (with improved subs) for the first 30 or so episodes already you know. The rest are coming eventually.
I'm the past week I've finished ZZ Gundam, F91, War in the pocket, SDF macross, and the movie. Now I'm in that weird spot where need to finally decided something else to watch. I'm thinking Macross +, 0083, and the Slayers series.

1) DVD rips are shit
2) LD and VHS rips are even worse
2) A lot of shows were made mainly on 16mm film because it was cheaper, the ones with better budgets were on 35mm film which usually looks clearer when they make a BD transfer for it. Sometimes shows used 35mm for the OP/ED and frequently used stock footage, then the rest would be in 16mm.

You can even run into some occasional 8mm stuff. Watch enough old blurays and you can eventually pick up the distinction by eye.
Most of /a/ watches new stuff. The threads like this for older stuff will never reach bump limit ever again.

I have tried to make threads for older stuff and they get like 12 replies before dying. I just don't know anymore.
I started watching "Iria Zeiram the Animation" a while back. It's not something I'm able to watch more than one episode at a time, and not that interesting either, so only watched three episodes so far, but it's okay and still pretty good.
Also finally started Rose of Versailles, but on a break after 10 episodes. About French royalty, taking place in the late 1700s? I fear how this will end.
But so far, it has been absolutely amazing, I love it. Just don't want to watch the ending I'm expecting to happen.

You're in for the greatest anime of all time, at least for me.
I'm watching zz Gundam,damn this series is a fucking mess.I'm at episode 18 and nothing has happend so far besides some fag with a rose chasing a babysitter called Bright Noa.
I finished LOGH last year and wanted to watch more adaptations of the same author. Arslan Senki's OVA are great but the story is incomplete and only six episodes. Nana Toshi Monogatari was just a two episode ad for the books, and was hodepodged and rushed.
I'm coming to realize most OVA's made in the 90's are essentially just vehicles to sell the manga.

I'm okay with that, I think. I enjoy the colors and style of early-mid 90's anime. There's plenty of stories (Nadia, Escaflowne, Rayearth, etc) that I can watch if I want a good story. I really enjoy OVA's anyways even if they're clear attempts at selling manga.

Tomino doesn't understand people or human relationships at all and can't write dialogue to save his life.
The plot is also as formulaic as any show from the 60s or 70s.

What stuff happens? Are there people trying to stop her? And then we just see her awesome escape scene? But then the city is destroyed and there are petals everywhere and a laser causes trees to grow. What is going on!
So when the city is destroyed and flowers everywhere, it seems the world is covered with green and vegetation. Also, it's the same spaceship that fires the laser that gives her the bunny powers? Is she a nature extremist, trying to destroy humanity to save the earth, and the enemies try to stop her, but in the end, we see her win when she's able to fire the laser, where the spaceship is shaped like a vegetable, representing the natural and her values. The destruction of the city followed by the flowers and vegetation growth represents how the destruction of civilization will bring back nature to how it was meant to be.
Okay, this are just some wild guesses. Am I on to something?

Long motw series with a competent staff are always my favorite thing to watch. Enough time to really flesh out a full cast, build the setting, and experiment, rather than the rushed mess modern seasonal anime is (similar to old ovas if anything, without the style and atmosphere). And the payoff of a good ending is always worth it.

Orphen was such a letdown, I was expecting a decent DnD-style adventure series and I got no adventures, a boring plot, and a case where everybody but Orphen is a useless load.

While the anime industry grow a lot(we get a ridiculously big number of shows a year if compared to old times), the mecha genre declined and is far from being relevant right now. Mecha don't sell anymore except if it's main-line Gundam.
If you like mecha you have no choice but to watch old shows. That's not the case if you enjoy anime in general, of course newer shows are going to monopolize all the discussion, you have something to move on. Lodoss got really nice threads when the BD was released but you can't expect people to come back to old shows, which are discussed a long time ago, unless there is something new to talk about.

The series as a whole is fucking fantastic. It's basically the grandaddy of modern shonen, and I get a better picture of how stuff came after it was inspired. In particular, Bobobo is a lot funnier to me know.

I think I can help a little more than other people saying "It just is" televisions were worse, 360p was high quality for a television and 720p was good enough for the production cut that they copy from by the company. A lot of things factored into it, the camera lens used to take pictures and so. Things had to be made quickly so it was sketched, inked, then colored with copic, and then pictures were taken. My reasoning being that the movie takes out a lot of content early on (which is bad) but adds in a very important scene near the end that wasn't in the OVA for some strange reason.

Another thing is that the 999 movies place a far bit of heft on the likes of Captain Harlock rather than being their own thing, so you kinda need to watch some Space Pirate to really get what Harlock is all about since he's prominent in the movies.

Sameface is who he is. Check out the new Yamato, of course. It's not his designs at all, but it really improves upon what the 70s show could do.
I'd recommend the Queen Millennia movie because it's kind of weird but still pretty good, if confusing and jumpy. The show is slowly being subbed by Live-eviL, but so far it's much weaker than Harlock. And speaking of Harlock, watch all of it except maybe the 6 part Ring Cycle OVA from the 90s, and Gun Frontier, and Cosmo Warrior Zero. Those you can skip unless you feel this compulsive need to watch more Leijiverse stuff. But the 78 series, the Arcadia of My Youth film, and the Endless Odyssey OVA from the early 00s, are all fantastic. Endless Orbit SSX may be okay, but it's almost more kiddie friendly despite being in the 80s when stuff is supposed to be getting more violent.

I kind of like that pic for a different reason: quickly shows the contrast between 16 and 35mm and what you can reasonably expect in terms of grain and detail. 16mm kind of tops out around 1080p for resolving any more detail, but 35mm is still suitable for 4K so BD really isn't the end of the line for some anime, they can be remastered again, and better. Some anime really fucking need it, like Tenchi Muyo and Bubblegum Crisis.

Kawajiri and Ishiguro were tapping into themes and trends that wouldn't really become a thing until so much later, and at least for Ishiguro, he did it again with Megazone 23. I just finished Dirty Pair this week and enjoyed it a lot, loved the art style for the TV series but my one complaint was about how it didn't really have much of a plot to begin with but the humour stopped it from being boring.
