It was the late 90s Evangelion and Utena had just aired and there was a sentiment in the air that Anime can find deeper truths in more elaborate ways than traditional mediums. It was the era of Grunge rock. The audiences wanted smart, attentive deconstructions and they weren't afraid of more somber meaning.

Plus there was all this buzz about the 'information superhighway' that was connected by dial up modems and how it might change things in the world.

Lain was ahead of it's time and it was also exactly on time.
>>
>>138897253
It obviously had a shitty budget.

How did a show like serial experiments lain ever get picked up by a brigade of tumblrinas obsessing over a fansite?

No matter where you go everyone is always connected.

Lain has its contemporaries.

.hack//Sign is probably the most noteworthy and most similar

Fuck you for making the 90's sound so interesting.

Other examples of series poised similarly to Lain are Ergo Proxy and Aku no Hana.

Dude. Nirvana, Michael Jordan, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Monica Lewinsky, Jolt Cola and the Hubble Space Telescope.

Oh, and all the best Final Fantasy games. Also Doom 2.

29 year old here. They actually were that interesting. I mean, this day and age is cool with the internet and all but the 90s had a healthy fusion of technology & nature.

Lain was also one of the first anime to air in a late-night timeslot. The idea was to use this kind of TV broadcast format for shows which in earlier years would have been OVA series, but were no longer viable because of the Japanese recession.
>>
Because of evangelion and it's success.
>>
>>138898274

It also doesn't help that the 00's were pretty shit. 9/11, the entire Bush administration, Dirty south rapers, crumbling economies worldwide, Michael Bay movies and Nickelback.

And computers + the internet was this mysterious yet intriguing and hopeful peek into what we thought could be an amazing future where knowledge was spread freely and intellectualism was the norm.

Unfortunately those ideas were a bit off-base. The 2000s rolled around and the internet turned into facebook and miles-high piles of clickbait brainless junk food writing.

These are going to be some chaotic times for the internet.

A whole generation of children are being raised on it.

Tail end. Soundgarden just broke up the year prior.

Facebook only really picked up in 2006.

2000-2004 were great times for the internet. Evolved, but still untamed.

Later than that. Myspace was still the go-to social networking site in '06.

Did people actually believe this bullshit? I mean, sure, I heard that line from excited thirty-something teachers, but the teens actually using the net were mostly after porn and character shrines.
>>
>>138898707
I was pretty much raised on the internet. Pretty much spent all my teenage years addicted to it, anyway.
>>
>>138898819
Agreed. Forums were active and amazing, IM and chat were positively buzzing, digital video sharing was getting a healthy start, and MMORPGs were populated with players who actually wanted to play the game and interact with other players instead of pushing a button and receiving loot.

>>138898968
I dunno. I wasn't old enough to have porn as a draw in the 90s (born in late 80s) but it seemed limitless and amazing even with the handful of sites that were online back in the mid-late 90s and that was enough to inspire serious awe in me.

Pretentious shit became cool in the 90s after Eva killed anime.

tail end or not it's moronic to label it as "grunge era" which was clearly the early 90s

techno/gabber raves and, distorted bass-infused funk and dark industrial was all the rage back then

Actually the tone was already shifting before Eva hit the market. Ghost in the shell, Key the metal Idol, Hell, Magic knight Rayearth, the year before Eva had a character that was literally an embodiment of the MC's angst.

The problem is that when too many people get into something it becomes shit. However, when too few people are into it, after a while it dies. You have to find a community that is just reaching its stride. In our case it is 8ch

>in b4 shill

It has to be something that has enough of a barrier to get into that keeps normalfags out. So if you want the old internet back I strongly urge you to get into the tech field.

Not him but it was legit a good time to be using a mac. In the earlier half of the 00s, pornsurfing with impunity was almost 100% safe because there really wasn't jack shit in the way of mac malware. The worst that'd happen would be a popup window attack (force quit your browser to fix) or an EXE would autodownload and nothing would happen because the OS had no clue wtf an EXE was.

>>138899346

cool, I'm not the only one who watched that! (though I admit, I only watched it myself after someone on /a/ recommended it for mech porn)

I remember visiting a bunch of Geocities sites about a the new DBZ anime - AF.

Now we live in a time where there really is a new DBZ anime.

And those thirty-something teachers were after the same thing those 90's kids were after, using the means available at the time, back in the 70's. Then, they grew up.

And have no doubt that the Internet did wonders for the spread of knowledge. The ease with which you can pick up some information on an obscure topic and then go on and discuss it with people who know more than you about it - just wasn't there. It's the golden age of critical thought.
>>
>>138899693
Really? AF was that old?

The 1st time I remeber hearing something about it was in 2007-2008.

I definitely remember seeing Goku with silver hair in the early 2000s.
