Dumping a few chapters of Sangokushi whenever I have time now that it's completely translated.
Recap of story so far: While Liu Bei leaves Xuzhou to fight Yuan Shu, Lu Bu betrays his host and decides to take it for himself, leaving Liu Bei and his army landless.
For those who don't know what this is, it's a faithful adaptation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Yokoyama Mitsuteru, the mangaka of Tetsujin 28, Giant Robo, Mars, etc. The art isn't amazing but if you've ever wanted to get into Three Kingdoms but didn't feel like slogging through book, reading this is the easiest way. The 2010 Chinese TV series was alright too, but that skips out on some fun arcs.

Diplomacy back then sure was a clusterfuck. Lu Bu, Liu Bei and Yuan Shu have pretty much gone full circle from being enemies / allies in what, a couple of weeks?
>>138849638
Diplomacy, or foreign policy in general, can be erratic when it's just one or two dudes making the decisions up at the top and they don't have to answer to anyone like in a democracy. It is funny though seeing the various characters pretending to be buddy-buddy with another until the moment they see an opening.

Zhang Fei doesn't take any shit, I don't think Liu Bei would have made it as far if he allowed Zhang Fei to do whatever he wanted. To the same effect he wouldn't have made it nearly as far without him.

No fucks on the Zhang train. Although he has a reputation of being a crass buffoon in pop culture, the novel portrays him as no simple buffoon and he knows when to give due respect. He treats both Kongming and Pang Tong like shit when all he's seen them do is act like arrogant know-it-alls, but he gives deference to their wisdom once they actually prove that they can walk the walk.

It's interesting to note that Zhang Fei supposedly played a greater role in the various Three Kingdoms plays during the Yuan-dynasty, in contrast to Guan Yu's greater role from the editions from Ming-dynasty and later. I'm curious as to what his characterization in those early versions were like.

I'm sort of trying to keep up with where things happened. Did Sun Ce depart from Nanyang?
>>138851043
Interesting, do you know if any records of those plays exist or have they been lost in time?
>>138851116
Yeah, Nanyang is Yuan Shu's base of power so that's where Sun Ce borrowed his army from. His campaign from hereon will be expansion south and eastwards from Nanyang.
>>138851149
Why does this same image get posted, like, all the time? I don't get it.
>>138850683
I thought Sun Jian died already.
>>138851149
I'm not sure if any survived in its entirety, but there definitely are a few, I believe, but not translated in English of course.
The whole evolution of Three Kingdoms lore is a pretty fascinating topic. I think Kongming got a major upgrade in favourable treatment during the Song dynasty (through the famous history text Zizhi Tongjian) compared to his original treatment in the Jin dynasty text, Sanguozhi.

This is the second time I've posted it and I was the one who cropped it.
Have you read the manga anon?
>>138851270
Yeah, that's a pretty major typo on my part. My bad.
>>138851258
Just a funny little quote from a famous drunkard that that poster has taken a liking to. RotK has a lot of funny quips though, kind of like LoGH. One of my favourite is the "job interview" between Sun Quan and Pang Tong.

Hox are of Asian ethnicity or grew up Japan if you don't mind me asking? I only ask since you translate manga by yourself, and have a damn good amount of knowledge about older manga and Asian history and History in general.

I love the cartoon style helmet jump.
>>138851676
Yeah, I've noticed that Yokoyama does do a bit of that old-fashioned goofyness that you often found in Tezuka's manga in the earlier volumes, but he weans away from it as the series goes on.
>>138851657
I translated Matsumoto Taiyou's boxing manga, Zero, from Korean, as I didn't have access to Japanese raws.
>>138851676
These two former bandits actually get a pretty drastic face lift when they reappear in the story many volumes later. Guess Yokoyama just didn't like how he first drew them.
>>138852125
Woops, posted the wrong image.
>>138852125
Enlisting in a southern army, not even once. He used to be Jesus.
>>138852146
>>138852042
Oh so they did reappear after all. I thought they never did or that I must have forgotten what they looked like by the time they got back in the action.
The other major face lift in Sangokushi that I'm aware of is for Yan Liang. Yokoyama actually changed Yan Liang's face when the tankoban version came out.
You can take a look at this page for how Yan Liang originally looked like in the original chapter that came out for the magazine: http://sazabimsn04.blog96.fc2.com/blog-date-20090210.html
>>138852298
Woops, I forgot to say Wen Chou as well. Both of Yuan Shao's famed generals, Yan Liang and Wen Chou, have different faces in their magazine and tankoban releases.
>>138852146
Either plastic surgery originated in China, or menopause affects their men as well.
And that's the end of the volume as well as today's dump.
Thanks for the dump.

Thanks.
