It was all about the witch gimmick before it started. Once it finally aired and they showed us the world of Mahocure, everything got stale really fast.
To be honest, this is the first time I can't give a shit about a precure season. At least other seasons are charming even if they're bad. A witch them had tremendous potential but they decided to give us some crappy show instead.
I hope Mahocure is a cool-down for a much, much better season next year.

It would be better to finish a precure seasons that you have on your backlog or to rewatch a season you like than to follow maho on a weekly basis.

After Doki I couldn't really get into Heartcatch, took me a week to watch like 14 episodes. Got really into it today and watched 22 episodes.
I like it just like the other Precure but what's so special about it ? I hear people saying that it's the best. I'm at episode 36 now and nothing really stood out.

I think most of the appeal of HC is because it's a pretty complete package, as Precure goes. It's got action and fight scenes they spent lots of resources on, it's got drama and emotion, there are climaxes that they work hard to build up to, and the flower theme is woven into the entire show (even the flower language shit is absolutely true).
It also sticks out for a couple of reasons. Tsubomi is special as a pink, not just because she's Nana but because she starts off as such a huge underdog. All these themes of opening your heart and expressing yourself honestly are seemingly better represented by Erika at first, but Tsubomi is the one who changes to become all those things. The much-maligned "Victim of the Week" format is also about as well done as it's ever been in Precure, with every single victim clinging to dark or difficult feelings that they're afraid to express, but then learning to open up in the hopes that it will lead to something better. That whole bit is probably more meaningful if you're well acquainted with that kind of emotional repression, though.
There's certainly no obligation to see it as the crown jewel of the franchise, though. It really depends on how you feel about some of those decisions they made.

Most Precures start out fairly competent though. I think Tsubomi is the only Cure period that loses her introduction fight and has to be bailed out, then she loses against her next enemy and Marine saves her, then she loses to Kumojacky shortly afterwards.

I was looking forward to the Sapphire transformation, as I think the outfits are by far the prettiest. Now that I've seen it, while the Ruby transformation still outclasses it with it's explosive movement, I still think the Sapphire transformation works very well, it's very elegant, and almost regal. And I like the music for it as well.
But most importantly: it's definitely better than Dia.
