Old bloc leader turned out to be a former bloc leader. He was supposedly popular and the favorite by a large margin for the upcoming elections but was politically muscled into exile so Gjallarhorn could get a plant elected.
Kudelia is using her financial backers and tekkadan to get him safely to where the elections are being held so he can be re-elected and has promised to meet mars demands if she can do it.
McGillis is also running some sort of scheme against gjallarhorn and his dad. He convinced Gaelio to have dying Ein mechanized into an MS, sent Carta to her death, and seems to be working towards something involving Gaelio either dying or being set up in some way.
Tekkadan meanwhile are pissed as fuck and have said that from now on they're going to just no-nonsense kill whoever gets in the way and have basically declared that they are going to get revenge on Gjallarhorn. And Orga specifically has decided he wants to bring all of Tekkadan to a better future/life, not just Mika.

Mari Okada is the writer for IBO. She's worked on numerous series in the past and she's known on /a/ (and I guess /m/) with some notoriety for her quality of writing. Which is to say, most don't enjoy her writing for various reasons outlined previously.
It's interesting that you've enjoyed IBO more and more after the first six episodes. Most opinions I've seen have only considered the plot of the anime to be spiraling downward ever since the introduction of Akihiro's brother, a sentiment I have to agree with.

Which is why it was so weak as a method of storytelling. With how the story has progressed, the entire issue with the Brewers could be removed and you wouldn't lose much. Like >>138814980 mentions, Akihiro fades into obscurity except to jump in his Gundam or make a comment in passing. The plot with Biscuit's brother was done better but again, the whole issue of introducing him out of the blue. It did help move the plot along and gave some background to Biscuit (and developed Atra) but, and as much as I hate to say it, the plot is very forced in those two examples.
I suppose Biscuit reflecting on his brother in recent episodes gave more purpose to it but as the story is moving along in the episodes where he's relevant, it wasn't executed well.

It's more about the fact that Ein has been just recently confirmed to be the final boss, and that the final boss turns out to be so fucking nothing. None of his kills will amount to anything besides wasting characters for the edgelord's kill count padding. And frankly that's what I think the Turbines are there for, which also fucking sucks.
