For all the story wants us to know, Monet died. Ace started his sailing 5 years ago and died 2 years ago. He went to Wano in that three-year span, so Momo would have been 3 to 5 years old, not old enough to really discern the difference. It's a setup for some more bonding time between Luffy and Momo when the truth comes out along with giving Ace a little more screen time.
