Getting that bouquet and having Kayoko and Mikuru in the audience for her only drove that point home. But even now, moments before the Cup, Akari is still thinking of how to help others. I'm pretty excited to see what Sena's going to do or say in the moments he has before Akari's turn next episode, and what an SA Fever appeal actually looks like.
To be quite honest I don't understand the backlash against Akari. Or I guess I do understand it, considering the reaction of some at the end of season 2. I know how easy it is to let your emotions take control of your brain.

Akari was cute when she was working hard just to meet the bare minimum skill level to be an idol. Now all of a sudden she's the best idol in the middle school and rather than getting away from Ichigo player 2 she became Ichigo.

Akari's gotten better, that much is obvious and I agree. It's the suddenly part I don't agree with. The same viewing standards don't exactly apply now like they did in season 1. To begin with, the Ichigo generation nearly reached Mizuki level in less than a year. Here, there's no slightly older and super good idol to directly compare them to, so you can only compare them to each other. Even the Great Starlight School Festival at the end of season 3 was a popularity contest, not one of skill, so even now it's not like they're suddenly Ichigo gen level. It's taken just as long or longer for them to all get this good, so I think they should be judged appropriately.
I just want this S4 to end already. I like Yume more than Akari already.

If I remember correctly, Ichigo and Aoi were one of the very few that aced the entrance exam out of a bunch of people, so Ichigo generation already came in strong. Only Ichigo surpassed Mizuki and the entire series was built around Ichigo running after Mizuki trying to reach her.
What bothers me about Akari is that she failed her initial entrance exam, only got into Starlight because she caught Ichigo's eye, did so poorly when she got in that she had to go to Aikatsu bootcamp just to avoid getting kicked out, and then shot straight to the top. I get that she worked hard, but so did everyone else. Juri, Hinaki, and Rin already had backgrounds in the industry and were working hard when Akari was at home watching Ichigo perform. The appeal to Akari for me was that she worked hard at doing what she loved despite not being particularly good at it. It feels like the only reason she's going to become SLQ is because shes the main character and the series is ending.

I won't use it as an excuse either way, but raw amount of time isn't always the only way to compare idols; if it was then there'd be a linear relationship between time and skill. Akari certainly had a lot of trouble at the beginning, but was that really for lack of potential, or was it just that it hadn't "clicked" with her yet? We see again and again that one of her defining characteristics is never giving up no matter what: building sandcastles and blocks as a child, finding berries for Sena, looking for Mizuki in the movie.
I'm going to be honest here, I stopped typing and forgot my original point. The important part is that it's not like Akari wasn't meant to be an idol, it's just that her first hurdle was much higher than everyone else's. She didn't have singing, dancing, acting, performing experience at all, just love for her idol, a bright smile, and a never give up attitude. And when she got over that hurdle, she was able to flourish.

I'm not the anon you've been replying too, but I share his opinion, yet I hadn't considered your point of view. I think it makes a little more sense when you think about it like that, but as someone who used to really like Akari in S2, she has completely lost her appeal to me.
I liked her as that idol who was overcoming her hurdles and difficulties. She lost everything that made her standout from the others when she was suddenly a contender for top idol. Like I said, your points do make sense, but I still think that the progression was too sudden.
On the topic of today's episode,and I'm biased because Sumire is my favorite Akari Generation idol, I actually feel better about her not winning due to a mistake rather than being unfairly surpassed by Akari (who shouldn't be as proficient in either singing or dancing). It still leaves a bitter taste though but at least Hinaki didn't get a Special A either.Also, we got some cute sidle shots.

The writing in today's episode didn't emotionally hook me like some past episodes, but it still deceived me and then threw me for a loop.I had known since they mentioned it that somebody would fail a Special A, but I convinced myself that Hinaki, Sumire, and Akari would take the top three spots. Even when Sumire said she'd go for an SA even with the possibility of failing at the beginning of this episode my silly brain didn't notice her fail flag. The episode title of Rosen Queen made me convinced she'd take the top, so during her performance I was so excited to see a Special A appeal I was blindsided by her failure.This is the sort of stuff I want to see more of in Stars, I want to see more crying.

The episode titlewas a really mean bait and switch. I honestly thought Hinaki would be the one to fail the appeal, and part of me still hoped that Akari would be the one to experience it, but even after Hinaki's performance ended and she got the top spot I was so thrilled to see Sumire take it that I completely forgot about that as well. My one big hope for Stars is that there's an actual rival character, and I hope she's like a Pretty Rhythm type of rival.The thing I disliked the most about S3 and S4 was the lack of competitiveness tension. I was waiting for Aikatsu's Hibiki to show up but I guess that was too much to ask for.

My expectations for this entire cup were overthrown a couple times. I wasn't expecting Juri to hold first place through the entire second day, I thought either between Rin or Madoka would surpass her. I wasn't expecting Nono to beat Risa either. As for the third day, I expected Hinaki not to do an SA Fever Appeal, but I was sure Sumire would pull it off and Akari would barely edge her out with her own in the next episode.
