Except when they do add to the characters in the show, which is almost always. The development and unique circumstance of making young girls into surrogate mothers opens up a new side of them. For every Hana-chan there's a dozen anime babies who are barely there and either evolve to take care of themselves or have a mascot/family member take care of them in place of the real MCs.
