There was a time when people seriously and earnestly believed that Kyoani was going to be the studio to lead anime into the 2010's and eventually take over from the old guard like Ghibli and Sunrise as the new captain of industry that everybody looked to for the next critical masterpiece. Turns out that studio ended up being A-1 Pictures though less in the critical masterpiece sense and more in the people will pay attention to the most attention to this stuff sense.

For shows so good they bump up a studio single-handedly, PA Works from Shirobako might be a high tier, and Pierrot at least mid tier from Osomatsu.
Gokumi should be on there as a mid or mid-high. Madhouse and BB are definitely not top tier, although I think it's just whoever made that chart being retarded because people would have argued with that years ago too.

Sounds like you're still leaving in the 2000's. While mostly popular with teenagers and newfags A-1 Pictures shows have consistently been among the most popular every season for a few years now and I'm starting to see them mentioned more and more in the discussion of those with the best animation quality and overall show quality period much like Kyoani used to be. Why I don't know, but that's how it is. I wouldn't move them up the list or anything but I know of plenty of people who probably would.

List was probably made 5 or so years ago long before they were relevant. People forget they're still a pretty new studio that was only founded in 2007 and only became active in 2009. Like a lot of studios founded in the mid 2000's they've only vastly expanded their output in the last few years.

A1 isn't a bad studio (it's too large and has too many different teams to be easily described as bad or good), but it just isn't as popular as KyoAni.

I personally never hear people say they watch shows for Sunrise anymore. Most people just seem to revile their shows unless it's Love Live or something. The last time they made something on their own that really seemed to gain any sort of traction at all in the West before that was probably Tiger and Bunny. Meanwhile practically everything A-1 Pictures or as you mention SHAFT and to a lesser extent these days Kyoani make is wildly popular.

Confirmation bias. A-1 is large, and is practically Sony (A-1 = Aniplex = SME = Sony), so the budget they can give their shows pretty much depends on which side of the bed a manager woke up on.
They tend to have large budget shows pretty often, which is why their popular.

Probably mid or mid-high at the moment. Started out high with Little Witch Academia, Inferno Cop and Kill la Kill but hasn't really been impressive since then. Ninja Slayer was OK but a letdown, and Inou Battle felt like it could have been done by any generic studio.

Studios don't really matter considering how everyone, even most directors, are essentially contractors.
The only directors that even end up tied to studios are their founding memebers / stockholders like Anno working for Gainax back in the day or Maruyama and MAPPA these days.
