He got Kaidou to fuck right off as he was planning to attack Whitebeard at Marineford. Kaidou doesn't really seem like the reasonable type either, yet Shanks arrived to Marineford unharmed.

Because Shanks showed up at the war with just one ship, I guess. We only ever saw Roger with one ship so it wouldn't be out of the question if Shanks had just the Red Force, too.

We actually don't know shit about Shanks really. We just know his CoC is off the charts (an aspect that has been insisted on), that he's strong or convincing enough to stop Kaido in his tracks, and that even after losing an arm, nobody fucks with him. His crew stopped a war despite the Marine's most powerful forces (the three Admirals, Sengoku and Garp) being relatively unharmed, not to mention the strongest Shichibukai didn't have a scratch either (although Mihawk left when Shanks arrived).
