I think it's actually the opposite in this case, my monitor is IPS and calibrated properly, but other screens, especially TNs screens that don't have the same color range, can't really reproduce the same colors. So what looks like a decent color selection for me doesn't really do the same for everyone else.
That's why sometimes I have to oversaturate the colors I use a little but I don't always like to do that.

Usually, what I do I is:
1) cover the area your currently coloring in a light color.
2) make a new layer and set it to clip to layer below.
3) cover that layer in a darker color (this will be the shadows.
4) use a brush and a transparent color to erase parts of the darker layer.
5) make another layer to add highlights.
And that's it. The color choices are up to you.
