1) Awesome animation quality.
2) Awesome character designs.
3) Awesome mecha designs.
Everything to be one of the best anime ever.
My opinion:
They tried to imitate evangelion, but failed miserably.

Eh, cancer hair made the transition to butterfly hair a lot more effective
For me it was the typical BONES nonsense deus ex machina ending. Nirvash vs TheEnd was the only good episode of the final arc imho. Sad because as you said, they got nearly everything else right. Stunning animation, good soundtrack, great character designs, mech designs and setting.
