IMO the problem with KyoAni right now, is they make quality anime that's too similar the generic crap that get's released today, but they don't remove themselves far enough away from it.
Like Phantom World feels like it could be a harem anime. It has harem anime like fan-service, but it's just... I don't know. It feels like it's trying to be something unique while giving the audience what they expect.
I don't even know how to word what I'm saying. But I understand why people bash KyoAni because I've been watching their productions for over a decade, and something feels off. I can't describe it.
It's like as much I hated how uninspired the new Star Wars movie was, I can understand why it was so similar to Episode 4/Empire. Hollywood is a business and the ignorant masses are scared of change. The anime market is the same.

It's not that they will never be in contact again, but there's a big difference from calling someone on occasion and visiting every month or so and being in contact with them every day.
If you want another example of a lasting inspiration you can look to the first season, which is all about Yui, an utterly directionless person with no goals or passions, turning into a person with a genuine love for music.
Also I find it hilarious that you call it poorly crafted, usually even the most adamant of K-on haters will at least admit that the show is extremely well made.
