Apparently they put the 27 year old scenes in as a narrative to merge the otherwise unconnected scenes of her as a 10 year old from the source material. He thought it was too hard to make a movie out of unconnected shirts about family life.
Then he made My Neighbors the Yamadas 8 years later which was exactly that. I liked Taeko better than the Yamada family though.
