It's one of those things that's really hard to justify on a mech and depends heavily on who's using it and the setting. Capes on giant robots are overall kind of pointless and can actually be detrimental. It works here and in Geass because of the whole noble and knight theme, and crossbone justified them as a temporary beam defense.

What are the odds of McGillis' betrayal being actually coercing Gaelio into getting the Alaya-Vijnana instead of simply killing him? Given Gjallarhorn's stance on implants, if he gets A-V he'll probably get disowned by his family anyway and Almiria will become the heiress. Gaelio can be easily fooled into thinking that it was his own decision and that he was prepared for the consequences.
This way Macky will have a durable but expendable meatshield piloting a Gundam and Bauduin fortune at his disposal.

Lot of quality this episode. Also, it's fucking amazing being able to pinpoint exactly when the writers said "oh shit this is being split up into two cours, we gotta wrap this shit up," and they just skip parts of the story at this point.
Hopefully the final battles are well animated though. This Ein Graze look rad.

This episode is probably the best in a while on the merits that it actually involves the characters doing things they were supposed to be doing but haven't been doing since the writing is a clusterfuck. Orga is agonizing over his decisions but coming out as a strong leader, Mika is pushing Orga again, Kudelia actually used her knowledge to make a plan, and Mcgillis is being a sneaky fuck creating robo-ein.
That said it was still quality city and carta escaping was inexplicable. Also really bad melodrama. I felt nothing.

Using Nobliss' connections, using Mcgillis' resources, organising the ship and so on. She's been purposely introduced as an ignorant girl so it'd be easier to see her learn and people still miss it.

McGillis' main goal is to fuck with his father's march to absolute power around the Earth. He's not helping Kudelia because he wants to deregulate the half-metal trade, although he didn't miss the opportunity to seize some profit from that, he's helping her because Makanai winning the elections will diminish old Fareed's dominance in the parliment (which he planned to achieve through alliance with that Fleur woman). After that's accomplished he'll probably want her dead because she could expose him as the Gjallarhorn snitch and will be in general an obstacle to gaining control over Mars.
As for Gaelio, killing him on that train route is like killing two birds with one stone. First, it gives him full control over Ein and makes him easier to manipulate. Second, old Fareed married McGillis into younger Baduin for his own interest not his son's. It strengthens his position in the seven stars but Almiria is not the main heiress, Gaelio is. Thus killing Gaelio off will make McGillis' marriage more profitable to him.
