The first season is miraculous also. Its only real flaw is egregious sidemouth. The animation goes off-model all the time and it's objectively the peak of Kyoani's creativity, before they mastered Horiguchi's style and copied it exactly forever and ever.

I agree, I think people give it a hard time. It absolutely nails what it was, which was a 4-koma adaptation. And then they threw us a curveball with season 2 and gave us something much more atmospheric and emotional. Its one of the best examples of how to do a second season I've ever seen.

I wasn't a moefag before I tried watching K-ON! then by the end I was completely mindbroken. It hooked me with the lively comedy plus some plot. Once I was lulled into the routine I was able to fully and freely cherish every episode of season 2 no matter how uneventful or less funny it was. Both seasons were necessary to facilitate my growth as a human bean.

I think the second season owes a lot to the first as well. Big part of it is thematically oriented around nostalgia and the concept of graduation, and I think the switch from happy-go-lucky Azumanga Daioh clone to happy-go-lucky but also emotionally investing and contemplative works to that purpose. It involves the viewer; we feel the same nostalgia that the girls do because we saw their carefree first few years firsthand. Graduation means a lot to us because it's moving on from all the stuff we already fell in love with. Really, I think the series is the best it could possibly be without doing like a full 60 episodes.

Part of how I see the pacing/length of each season is that in 12 episodes you go through 2 full years of school, but in the second one it's 24 episodes of only the last year (discounting bonus episodes)
It reminds me of not appreciating what you have until it's gone/nearly gone, in a way, and this also ties in to your point of moving on from what you already fell in love with, and the happy-go-luck vibe of the first season vs. the emotional invested vibe of the second.

The manga's certainly worth reading if you were impressed by the anime. It helps that you can read each volume in about half an hour. It only begins to suck after volume 4 past where the anime ends.
It's interesting not to notice the differences but to see how the entire story is all there, crammed into 4 short books with 4koma pacing. You can appreciate both how much it was expanded for TV as well as how the manga doesn't dillydally too much and moves along quickly. I find the manga better than Gochiusa, which has 4 volumes and has barely moved forward from the beginning. The pace is relentless in K-ON!
The college arc demonstrates how easy it is to fuck up the natural group relationship when the cast bloats. Kakifly did right when he neglected to add another freshman during that golden opportunity when the girls were in their last year trying to recruit new members so that Azusa wouldn't get left behind. We wouldn't have gotten episode 24 and the movie if he bloated the cast like so many other writers do. There would have been some gay ass handing-over-the-baton life continues message instead of the bittersweet mono no aware passage of time and the importance of making happy memories feeling.

My problem with the college manga is that it feels more like "HTT meets The Girlz" but the other band is forgettable. Besides Akira I literally don't remember the other girls names or looks and the only reason I remember Akira is because she is such a blatant Azusa ripoff.

While I don't have don't particularly care to much about Nao I can agreed that is the only new character that had her own role and was neither boring nor a keion clone.
Is a shame the manga ended like that though. I think the college manga should had focused more in the original 4 until the glorious day when they are reunited with Azusa instead of adding boring characters and their pointless back stories.
Azusa clearly missed the girls a lot. Always talking about them, calling Yui and resisting the urge to go see them because it was her responsibility to make the club succeed. There is no reason to believe she would not chase after her friends them after completing his work as the club president or for them to not welcome her back.

When there's too many characters in a show, and it tries to divide time between them all, one of two things usually happen. Either their personalities start to disappear or they'll be distilled to their signature trait until they're a flanderized walking gag.
Keions are great because they don't fit into designated permanent roles like boke or moeblob or tsundere. Even during the first season, so there's no excuse if other shows don't pull that off. It just has good writing.

Yui is basically a failure of an older sister for Ui. At the same time she does a respectable job of looking after Azusa. She's a helpless airhead in the beginning but there's a few points you can see she grows more capable. Like the talent show while studying episode; she pulls both things off and also mistakenly borrows sugar instead of soy sauce in the same episode.
The manzai roles are pretty fluid. Ritsu might get slapped by Mio then later shiver at Mio's girly lyrics, or do retorts for Yui. It's more of a joke telling method rather than character archetypes at that point.
I've been postponing watching the movie for 6 months. I just don't want the ride to end. Fucking hell.

One thing I don't like about the ending to K-ON is how they all go to the same university at the end. It really doesn't have an emotional impact like they want you to have and would've been much more heartbreaking if they really went separate ways and to different schools, sure Azusa gets left behind but it would've been a much better sequel if we got all four of them in whole new environments separately.

Well I can see the motherly behavior here and there with small things like reminding Yui to study/wake up early helping Ritsu, cheering on Azusabamong other things but the problem might be that in S2 she doest have a dedicated episode to show that side of het instead every time she got screen time was about her blushing or being scared and I think this is all do her own popularity. They knew that being cute and shy was the thing her fans liked the most so instead make her do something different that might upset the fans they played safe by making her do more of the same.
