Oh, it goes further back than you could ever imagine.
Mosaic censorship was the most time consuming part of those old, traditional paintings. Way way back then before computers, an artist would stretch and lay strings over the painting to create a precise grid. They couldn't use glue or tape to keep the strings in place back then, so they would have to sew it into an inconspicuous part of the painting. When they're done making the grid, they would carefully choose the color palette for painting over the mosaic. Actually painting the mosaic was the hardest part since they'd have to paint straight, so even the slightest of movements could ruin the whole thing. Afterwards, the strings would be removed and the holes left behind was painted over. Some artists would even carefully patch the holes with rice paste before painting over.
Back then, the choice of an artist on whether to censor or not was no joke either because once they decided to do it, there would be no going back and the original content would be forever lost.
