Bakemonogatari is easily the most well-directed season, but the source material is weak compared to everything after Nisemonogatari. Sure, the adaptation of Second Season has some issues but the core writing is so good that I like it better than Bake.

I guess while the plot/writing side of things is much better, we get to meet a lot of great and interesting new characters... The anime adaptation leaves something to be desired. It has begun to feel very, by the numbers with it's style and how to sets up each of it's episodes. Visually, storyboards and direction, nothing is terribly standout-ish.
We have some great moments, I enjoyed Shinbou's farewell to her first servant and Sodachi's arc/s was engaging for recent examples, but it was more of the same otherwise. I guess, the current staff doesn't try to take any risks and it becomes dull to a certain extent.

Itamura just isnt up to par with Oishi and you can see a steady decrease in his efforts over the seasons. Nise has better direction than SS. SS than Owari and you can include all the TV specials between in that list. I guess the series is just dragging on too long for him to want to put any effort in at this point.

Agree that, post-Bake, the direction has gotten significantly worse and the adaptation suffers from it. I would say that I think Owari has better direction than SS though.
