The stupidest thing Light did was letting L and the Cops know that he had access to Police information.
All L knew (or at least suspected) was that Kira was a student in Kanto. But when Light purposefully let everyone know that he has this info, he was narrowed down from millions of possible suspects to hundreds of people related to police officers, losing several magnitudes of anonymity.
This was without a doubt the dumbest thing Light did. Far dumber than Mikami or killing Lind L. Tailor. He would have had guaranteed anonymity if he had just kept kept doing what he was doing, it would be impossible for L to ever get any clues that would lead him to Light.
I know he wanted to make L and the police distrust each other, but it definetly wasn't worth losing such a huge advantage and blowing his anonymity, and there were other ways to cause this distrust.
