Well he wasn't that bad. I mean yeah, he did torture and kill people, but those were just heretics, who cares about them?
Really though, at least he truly believed what he was doing was good, and in the end he was right - if Guts and Caska were killed, the demons wouldn't be drawn to their brands, and people at Albion might have survived. I also always liked how after he died his body burned saving others from the demons. It was a nice touch.
